The
Northern Pacific Railway's employees were in the mix. One man that I really
enjoyed when I was a kid was the third trick station agent at Lester, his name was
Elmer O. Schweppe. I knew this gruff ol' guy as plain "Sweppy."
That man spoiled me rotten and I was not aware just how bad I was spoiled
until I became older.
I spent many an evening over at the Lester Depot visiting Schweppe with my grandpa Bruno after dinner each night. I know that I wasted a lot of Northern Pacific's stationary sitting on a chair that he had all set up for me with two Sears catalogs under my butt so I could reach the top of the desk that was in the bay window facing the tracks. I have a collection of photos that are in the family plus those I have taken over the years on the many trips I make into Lester each season as soon as the snow melts off of either Stampede or Tacoma Pass.
