My
name is Mike McGee and I hail from
Granite Falls, Washington. This page
is my attempt to show and tell of the Lester and Stampede Pass area.
Why
is Lester so special to me? Well, I have to go back to my childhood when
my grandparents, Bruno and Alice Menzel lived and worked in Lester throughout
the 1960s. I had the wonderful experience of spending summers and the holidays
in Lester, bouncing in the back seat of my parents car over the dusty chuck
hole laden Stampede Pass Road in the summer, or taking the train through the
snow in the winter.
There
were a great cast of characters in Lester at the time. Most were loggers who
worked for the Scott Paper Company, either lived in "town" or they
stayed in camp.
The
late singer John Denver even worked in Lester for Scott Paper in the summers
while he was going to college. There is a story of a guitar being busted over
his head while he was sitting on a landing for a lunch break.
