| Sarah J. Duchane was the 6th child born to Thomas and Ellen Duchane . She was born in 1873 in Barrie, Ontario. Finding Sarah's name solved a 10 year mystery. In 1992, we received a copy of a baptismal certificate for Albert Dushane, son of John and Mary Dushane. The name Sarah J. Rose appears on the certificate as a sponsor. We were never able to determine who she was. The name Sarah J. Duchane listed in the census report led us to believe that this was the same person, due to the use of the middle intial. We researched the Marquette City Directories and found a number of entries for persons with the surname Rose from the earliest directory on. In 1894 we found Alfred Rose who resided with Thomas Duchane, Sarah's brother. In later directories husband and wives names were entered. In 1910 the entry read Alfred and Sarah J. Rose. The last entry for the Roses was in 1935. Sarah passed away in August of that year. She died of cancer. One year later in September of 1936 Alfred passed away as well. Both are buried in the Potter's Field at Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette. Sarah's obituaries appeared in the Mining Journal. Survivors included her husband, Alfred Rose, her daughter, Mrs. James (Jennie) Burns and her sister Georgina Brigman. We will continue to research Sarah's descendants. We believe they are still living in Marquette County. |
