Emiliano Poucel y Santa Cruz
and
Dolores Guerrero
Luisa (Duba), Emiliano, Guillermo (William), Chabela, Ana (my grandmother), Dolores, Carmen and Alberto
Emiliano Poucel married my great grandmother Dolores Guerrero, a beauty then, and a beauty now, as you can appreciate by the photographs.
They had seven children: Ana in 1886 (my grandmother); Luisa in 1888 (who probably died soon after); Guillermo (William) in 1893; Alberto in 1897; Magdalena Luisa in 1901 (my aunt Duba, revered by my Mother and her brothers Emiliano and Pancho); Carmen in 1992, and Isabel (My aunt Chabela) in 1993.
In the left photograph, you have from left to right: Luisa (Duba), Emiliano, Guillermo (William), Chabela, Ana (my grandmother), Dolores, Carmen and Alberto ... What a handsome bunch!
This is the part of the of the family where I, Luis Emiliano Gutierrez Poucel, descent from. Jose Maria Emiliano Poucel y Santa Cruz was born on 9 August of 1856, the youngest of ten. As was the family tradition, he soon joined the military school at the age of 13. Although he was too young to see active duty against the French during the Napoleonic invasion, he played an active role during the Mexican revolution. He raised in rank to become a Brigadier General in the Mexican Army.

My great grandfather supported President Madero and Vice-president Pino Surez. After wining the presidential elections, Madero's government suffered the constant opposition of Congress and the Porfiristas who were planning a coup d'tat, which started on 9 February 1913. The rebellion was headed by generals Bernardo Reyes, Manuel Mondragn, Felix Diaz and Victoriano Huerta. These events were known as the "Tragic Ten". Madero and Pino Surez were apprehended, and forced to resign. On the night of February 22, as they were being transferred to the Lecumberri prison, they were assassinated by Victoriano Huerta's goons, in what was a doubtful skirmish with unknown assailants. Given his staunch support for Madero and popularity within the army, General Emiliano Poucel was imprisoned in the dungeons of Chapultepec lake until his exoneration and liberation months later. Given the inhuman conditions of the dungeons, his health was never the same, giving up active military duty and dying a couple of years later.
He was a very tall man, as you can see in the photo above, the photographer had to sacrifice half his head to capture the other people in the shot.
By the way, the 5th son of Francisco (Pancho) and Ana Maria (Mia), Francisco (Panchito - he hates it when I call him that, being as he is tall, 6.4 feet, and robust, 260 pounds, but as I tell him, it is a term of endearment, ... he lets me get away with it), anyway he looks exaclty as Great grand father Emiliano), ... wow, talk about fhe Poucel genes!
