There are many different versions of Orcs. They are
illustrated in games (Warcraft), books and movies. First I am going to
talk about JRR Tolkien's version of Orcs.
My
favorite Tolkien joke probably is: How many Orcs
does it take to change a light bulb? None. They'll all kill each other
before they get the job done.
Orcs were actually more vile and nasty in
JRR. Tolkien's earlier literature than they
turned out to be in THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS.
Orcs were fond of tying their prisoners to trees and torturing them to
death. Tolkien's Orcs are a mixture of pitiful savagery and abandoned
corruption. They represent the worst aspects of mankind's darker nature.
Orcs and goblins
are supposedly one and the same thing in Tolkien, but he describes them
quite differently in THE HOBBIT (where they are goblins, mostly,
with only one or two Orc references) and in THE LORD OF THE RINGS
(where they are Orcs, mostly, with only one or two goblin references).
Now, I will introduce
to you the Orcs from Warcraft
The savage, green-skinned Orcs are one of the
most prolific races of the Warcraft world. Born on the hellish world of
Draenor, the Orcs were brought into the kingdom of Azeroth through the
dimensional gateway known as the Dark Portal and forced to make war upon
the Humans. The Orcs are typically believed to be brutal and mindless,
possessing no humanity or empathy for other races. Although few are aware
of it, the Orcs once cultivated a noble, Shamanistic society on the world
of Draenor. Yet the proud Orc clans were corrupted by the Burning Legion
and used as pawns in the Legion's invasion of Azeroth. In recent years the
Orcs have begun to release themselves from the Demons' corruption, and
rekindle their ancient, noble traditions.
