Maureen Johnson: Research
Maureen Johnson's outfit from the Broadway musical RENT is a collection of found modern pieces with the apropos boho flair. For pictures of more RENT characters, including Maureen, check out my RENT graphics site The Boho Girls.
Note: Maureen Johnson has a few costume changes through the course of the play, but I've only studied her Act One "Over the Moon" costume. Also, the final two pictures above show the Canadian tour costume, which is slightly different (tunic and leggings rather than a shirt and jeans). However, I liked the idea of attaching the cowbell and sunglasses to the belt, so this is why they are also included.
Shirt - Maureen wears a long sleeve knit shirt with a nightscape print. The sleeves are made of colorful bands of similar fabric.
Pants - Maureen wears flared jeans with yellow appliques of a variety of shapes (moon, stars, flowers). These are placed all over the jeans, the most prominent the large star placed right over the crotch seam. There is yellow lacing through silver grommets down the outer seam of both pant legs. The pants have a waistband with belt loops. Sometimes, the hem is also decorated with bands of ribbon.
Accessories - Maureen wears a white belt sometimes with or without silver grommet decorations. She also wears white boots, usually with some type of heel or platform sole.
Props - As part of her protest routine, Maureen uses a cow bell, plain drumstick, and sunglasses.
