Shieldmaiden Gown: Research
Eowyn's Shieldmaiden Gown from Lord of the Rings is comprised of four parts: outer corset, vest, chemise (with two part sleeves), and overskirt. Don't forget to check out ACS for more information on this costume.
Corset - the corset is made of brown suede, most likely interfaced with coutil or duck and reinforced with boning. The middle portion of the corset is quilted in one inch squares. There is a single section of embroidery at the top of the corset, comprised of a row of vine-like gold stitching, another of curly organic shapes, and then a second row of gold vining. This embroidery is then repeated at the bottom of the corset three times over. The corset laces in back with leather cording through 22 silver grommets (11 on each side). It also has a modesty panel of the same brown suede that makes up the main body of the corset.
Vest - The vest is made from a patterned brocade, creating an embossed look from a distance. The brocade is nearly the same shade as the corset. There are cap sleeves that feature the same gold embroidery as the corset and this is also repeated around the deep V-neck. The vest closes in back with an invisible zipper.
Chemise & Overskirt - there has been much debate over whether the original is all one piece or not. I think the final consensus is that it is actually two pieces: a chemise with the long sleeves and then a gathered skirt. The chemise has pintucking around the keyhole neckline and is bound with bias tape that was then embroidered in a gold swirly design. The sleeves are two part: a gathered upper sleeve that ends at the elbow and then a full lower sleeve that is split to allow the arm through and gathered close with cording. The seam at the elbow is hidden by braided cording in a similar off-white color. Check out Maggie's site for a great tutorial.
