Name: Oprah Gale Winfrey

Born: 29th January 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. 

Family: Oprah was born to Vernita Lee and Vernon Winfrey. They were unmarried teenagers who lived in poverty. 

Education: Oprah’s deeply religious grandmother educated her. She could read at a young age. She also attended a number of schools.

Occupation:

  • When Oprah was 19 she worked part-time for radio station WVOL, Nashville.

  •  She dropped out of university to become a newsreader at Nashville's WTVF-TV.

  • In 1976, she moved to WJZ-TV and after a stint as a reporter and was promoted to co-anchor.

  • She hosted the show People Are Talking.

  • Oprah is currently the host of an international show called The Oprah Winfrey Show; she is now the wealthiest black woman in the US.

 Major Accomplishments: 

Oprah is committed to making the world a better place. Each year she generously donates millions of dollars to several charities.

 Awards:

Winning an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress with her film debut as Sofia in Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple.
