Path- goal Theory

The idea of path-goal is the belief that leaders need to clarify the path to help followers get from where they are to the achievement of the necessary goal by reducing �road blocks�. It is the leader�s job to assist followers to achieve goals, and to provide direction and support to ensure that goals are compatible with the overall organisational objectives.[1]  To do this the leader must choose a compatible style which will take account of the environmental contingency factors and the followers� contingency factors to achieve the necessary outcomes.  This is shown in the figure below.

Directive style � leads to higher satisfaction when tasks are ambiguous or stressful
Supportive style � leads to high performance and satisfaction when tasks are structured
Participative style � leads to more satisfaction with employees with an internal locus of control
Achievement-oriented style � leads to an expectation that effort leads to high performance when tasks are ambiguously structured
