Who's That Doll?
SAILOR MOON
1990's 1990's
Although the written story of Sailor Moon has been around since the mid-1980's, the animated cartoon didn't hit the American airwaves until the 1990's. The fashion dolls soon followed. Two companies made the Sailor Moon dolls, first Ban-Dai in the late 1990's, and then Irwin Toys, who made them into the early part of 2000. The dolls have two completely different looks about them, as you will see below.
Sailor Venus, at left, was made by Ban-Dai.
Sailor Moon, at right, was made by Irwin Toys of Canada.

While both facial types bear little resemblance to the cartoon characters they are based on, it's easy to see that Irwin Toys made an attempt to give the doll the huge eyes typical of anime characters. The face itself is wider, but there isn't as much detail with respect to eyebrows, lashes or depth of color in the eyes. They look a bit washed out.
The eyes on the Ban-Dai doll are better defined, but the face has practically no bump where the nose would be. And while again, this is typical of anime characters, in a three-dimensional doll it's rather disturbing.
The dolls have rooted hair and removable dresses, but all other details are either painted on, sewed on, or molded as part of the body. In the example shown here, Sailor Mercury's boots and gloves are made as part of the body style. The crown on her forehead is also molded on. Her eyes, lashes and brows are painted, as is the neckband. Her arms swivel away from her body. The underwear does come off, I just didn't bother.
Most of the dolls in my collection were made by Irwin Toys. Only Beryl and Sailor Venus were made by Ban-Dai. My collection is not yet complete. There are still many Sailor Moon dolls in the 6-1/2" size that I'm still looking for!

Tuxedo Mask is Sailor Moon's love-interest. A mystery hero who often saves her bacon at the last moment.
When not in the guise of Sailor Moon, Serena has met a young lad named Darien, who becomes Tuxedo Mask. Why she can't see that it's him when all he does is dress up and put on shades is completely beyond me.
It's the same reasoning why Lois Lane can't tell Clark Kent is Superman, I suppose.
Tuxedo Mask's body-style and face behind the glasses will have to remain a mystery for now, as I just deboxed him for this photo session, and I'm unwilling (at the moment) to subject him to this particular indignity. Besides, the glasses are stitched to his head and I'm not snipping them off!
Queen Beryl is one of the nemeses faced by Sailor Moon and the other Sailor Scouts.

Again, she has rooted hair, but molded and painted details. This is a very cool-looking doll, and after many months of coveting my son's doll, I finally managed to get one of my own!
Queen Beryl
Other Sailor Moon dolls will be added here as I acquire them. My research has shown there are at least a half-dozen more, including other enemies of the Sailor Scouts, that I have yet to add to my collection. Stay tuned!
