Summary of QUARTERLY MEETING: Jan. 25, 2003


Place: Bruins Den, Long Beach Time: 1:38 - 2:38 p.m.
Board members and officers present: Shirlee Hitchcock, Jim Knutson, Buzz Minnich, Carolyn Reed and Jim Walters.
Board members and officers absent: Pablo Drobny, Fred Nicas, Nancy Sheriff and Richard UlibarriOthers attending: 2 members
Secretary's report: The secretary reported that the association will be obtaining memberships in the Friends of Long Beach Animals and the Long Beach K-9 Officers Assn., which have both supported the association.
Treasurer's report: The previously approved December report was presented.

Remarks

September quarterly meeting was canceled due to a lack of quorum and no participants.

Committee Business

Projects & fundraising: Co-chairmen and Board members Buzz Minnich and Richard Ulibarri.
-- Pet Fair: Event Chairwoman Carolyn RReed reported that the first or second weekend of August is sought. She will check the Department of Parks Recreation & Marine's schedule in February and then set up an organizational meeting in late February.

Nominations and elections: Chairman and Board member Pablo Drobny.
-- Referendum: No report as Pablo Drobnny was absent.

Maintenance & planning: Co-chairmen and board representatives Jim Knutson and Fred Nicas.
-- Dog beach: Jim Knutson reported thatt there has been no progress of late due to the disarray at City Hall over the budget deficit and a court ruling that decided the makeup of the California Coastal Commission was unconstitutional. In the meantime, he said, Justin Rudd has scheduled six more monthly "Haute Dog" events at the beach.
-- February closure: Jim Knutson reportted on the work that will be done Feb. 17-21: cleanup of the two main watering stations, installation of several sprinklers in the middle of the park, the planting of seven trees and the dumping of 200 tons of groundcover.

Membership: Chairwoman and Board member Carolyn Reed.
-- Membership: Carolyn Reed reported thhat membership still lags last year's and gave several factors: the sagging economy, last year's membership represented an additional six months as the organization switched from a calendar year to a fiscal year and a turnover as people have moved and dogs have died. She reported that one last mailing was done to recruit those whose memberships had lapsed, trying to get them to rejoin before the referendum vote for the association to oversee additional off-leash areas in town.

Communications & advertising: Chairman and board representatives Jim Walters.
-- Paw Prints: Jim Walters reported thaat the winter issue will be mailed in early February, in time to notify members of the upcoming park closure.
-- Brochure: Mr. Walters also noted thaat a park brochure is in the proofreading stages. Copies will be placed at the entrance and used at other city events to recruit members. Shirlee Hitchcock is making a sign to accompany the brochure box.

Next quarterly members meeting will be 10 a.m., Saturday, April 26, at the Bruins Den.
Next regular board meeting: 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine headquarters on Studebaker Road.
