| Secretary's report: The secretary reported that membership forms for the Friends of Long Beach Animals and the Long
Beach K-9 Officers Assn., have been filled out; he will drop them off with Treasurer Fred Nicas for checks to be enclosed
and mailed. MOTION by Carolyn Reed, seconded by Buzz Minnich to approve the minutes until the November meeting, approved, 4-0, with Nicas and Reed abstaining; Ulibarri not present. | |

Projects & fundraising: Chairman and board representative Buzz Minnich.
-- Pet Fair: Event Chairwoman Carolyn Reeed reported that the first or second weekend of August is desired. New rules at the Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine are such that reservations cannot be made more than six months in advance. She will check the department's schedule in February and then set up an organizational meeting. Jim Walters agreed to obtain the health and solicitation permits from the city.
-- Ice Dogs: Event organizer Jim Walterss reported that only two tickets were sold for the Jan. 15 event; a minimum of 20 need to be sold to receive the discount rate. He suggested calling off the event. It was suggested that the association try to schedule a hockey fundraiser in the Ice Dogs' next season, in February.MOTION by Shirlee Hitchcock, seconded by Jim Walters, to cancel the Jan. 15 Ice Dogs fund-raiser event, approved, 7-0.

-- Dog beach: Jim Knutson reported that there has been no progress of late. He said that city workers are preoccupied with a huge budget deficit and that the California Coastal Commission has been stalled by commission constitutionality issues. In the meantime, he said, Justin Rudd has scheduled additional monthly "Haute Dog" events at the beach each month.
-- February closure: Fred Nicas said thaat work will commence Feb. 17 at the Dog Park, even though it is Presidents Day, and continue through the week. The two watering stations inside the main park will be backhoed to a depth of two feet, the rock and muck removed and new gravel installed. Water lines will be added to the middle of the park for additional sprinklers, which will be guarded by clay pipe. A total of seven trees will be planted: three purchased by the association (below), the two vandalized trees in the little-dog park will be replaced with three jacarandas by the city and an evergreen has been donated by Patrick R. Henry, founder and director of Adopt-a-Tree. An additional 200 tons of decomposed granite will be dropped to cover some of the thin spots in the main park. Mr. Nicas also said that he may attempt to remedy the pooling water inside the main gate by getting some of the sidewalk removed.MOTION by Jim Walters, seconded by Carolyn Reed, to authorize Fred Nicas to spend up to $3,500 for decomposed granite, approve, 7-0.
MOTION by Carolyn Reed, seconded by Shirlee Hitchcock, to authorize Fred Nicas to spend up to $500 on items to install additional sprinklers in the middle of the main park, approved, 7-0.
-- Trees: Jim Walters reported that the purchase of three $100 trees through the Parks Department's Adopt-a-Tree program have been made and that a work crew from the department has scheduled their planting Feb. 18.
-- Coke machine: Jim Knutson said he kneew nothing about the removal of the soft-drink machine by the bathroom, but did note that a concrete pad about 3 feet by 3 feet had been poured.Membership: Co-chairwomen and board representatives Carolyn Reed and Shirlee Hitchcock.
-- Membership: Carolyn Reed reported thaat one last drive for membership, this one hinged on asking people to renew before the referendum vote, is ready to go.MOTION by Jim Walters, seconded by Shirlee Hitchcock, to authorize Carolyn Reed to spend up to $100 in postage for her membership drive mailing, approved, 7-0.

-- Paw Prints: The winter issue will be mailed in early February, in time to notify members of the upcoming park closure, Jim Walters said. Shirlee Hitchcock said that she thinks we'll have eight to 10 ads in this issue.
Other Business
1. MOTION, by Carolyn Reed, seconded by Fred Nicas, to adjourn, approved 5-2, with Hitchcock, Knutson , Minnich, Reed and Ulibarri voting yes; Nicas and Walters voting no.
