Summary of BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING: April 4, 2002


Place: Pablo Drobny's home, Long BeachTime: 7:40-9:05 p.m.
Board members and officers present: Pablo Drobny, Shirlee Hitchcock, Jim Knutson, Buzz Minnich, Fred Nicas, Jim Walters.

Secretary's report: A correction to the February minutes: Donations to the Kabul Zoo Fund totaled $260 and the association contributed $40 to make the final check to the North Carolina Zoo Society $300.
MOTION by Jim Knutson, seconded by Fred Nicas, to approve the corrected minutes from the February regular board meeting, approved 4-0, with Shirlee Hitchcock and Carolyn Reed abstaining.
Treasurer's report: Treasurer Fred Nicas reported that the all year-end reports have been filed with the State Franchise Tax Board and the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS has sent the association Form 8734 which finalizes our 501C tax-exempt status, he said, and the Regular Renewal Fee report has been filed with the state attorney general to declare where our funds come from.
MOTION by Buzz Minnich, seconded by Jim Walters to approve the treasurer's report for February, approved, 6-0.

Committee Business

Projects & fundraising: Chairman and board representative Buzz Minnich.
-- Book-signing: The April 6 book-signiing by "Dogged and Determined" author Scott Ringwelski will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Jim Walters will contact Lillian Estrada for a table for the event.
-- Pet Fair: Gerry Facon and Lori Edwarrds, who organized last year's Pet Fair, may be willing to organize this year's. Mr. Minnich said. It was suggested that they be invited to the next board meeting to being getting ready for the next fair. Mr. Walters said he would ask the Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine for Aug. 10 for the event; a backup date of Aug. 17 will be requested.
-- Survey: Mr. Minnich reports that aboout 60 park-goers responded to his survey over the past few weeks. About 40% of the respondents are members of the association. The three most important topics, he said, were improved lighting, clean-ups at the park, and tied for third were poop bags and ground cover. At the other end of the spectrum, he said, rated least important were garage sales and fence repairs.

Nominations and elections: Chairman and board representative Pablo Drobny.

Maintenance & planning: Co-chairmen and board representatives Jim Knutson and Fred Nicas.
-- Mr. Nicas said that the next shipmennt of ground cover is tentatively set to begin April 9. The 200-ton shipment is estimated to cost $3,000.

-- Mr. Knutson said that work will begin on the west side of the north fence on the first new lights for the park. In addition, the broken double gates will be replaced, the dilapidated fence on the west side of the park will be replaced, the tall tree stump by the north fence will be cut down, and excavation work will be done on the northeast corner near the restroom. Mr. Nicas and Mr. Knutson will meet with Lee Miller and Joe Ambose of the Parks Department about the repairs.

Membership: Co-chairwomen and board representatives Carolyn Reed and Shirlee Hitchcock.
-- Logo contest: Ms. Reed said the logoo contest will be extended through April 30 to allow for more entries. Dennis Hite and Lillian Estrada have agreed to judge, she said, and one more person is needed.
--Membership drive: Forms for the '02-''03 membership year will be in the next issue of Paw Prints and left at the park.

Communications & advertising: Chairman and board representatives Jim Walters.
-- Paw Prints: Mr. Walters is wrapping up the Spring 2002 issue of Paw Prints this next week. Shirlee Hitchcock agreed to help get the newsletter mailed.
-- Parental warning: Pablo Drobny's sugggestions have been incorporated into the parental warning flier, Mr. Walters said, and new fliers will be made this week.

Other Business

1. Expenses: MOTION by Carolyn Reed, seconded by Shirlee Hitchcock, to authorize Board members and officers to incur up to $100 in expenses without prior approval from the Board, approved, 6-0.

2. Guest speakers: Suggested speakers for the spring quarterly members meeting are Terri Latanzio, of Therapy Dogs International, and Mary Lacross, who does performance demonstrations.

Next Meetings

Next quarterly members meeting will be Saturday, April 26 at the Bruins Den.
Next regular board meeting: Thursday, April 4, at Carolyn Reed's home.
