Bronze Bully

The Lazarenkos/Robbie McIntosh and Gordon Haskell/Larry Guild Review, by Hazel Pryce (Glasgow Songwriters Magazine)

Friday 7th September, Loreto Club, Greenock

Robbie McIntosh and Gordon Haskell have a long musical history stretching behind them which goes back to the 1960's and performances with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Otis Redding as well as umpteen other hit acts from that era.

With experience like that behind them the local talent really had to try hard to be able to hold their own but I'm happy to report that hold their own they did.

First up was our own evergreen, ever popular Larry Guild who is no stranger to these pages. A man, who claims that he doesn't get nervous about performing live, he just gets up and does his usually flawless stuff. The set he performed tonight was made up of the reflective ballads that we have grown used to from his live CD "As The Crow Flies" and some of the songs that will be included on his forthcoming recording, due out in December I'm told.

Larry plays a beautiful guitar accompaniment, which compliments his angel like voice and with these natural gifts he is always able to get his self penned songs across in a manner that almost guarantees the audience will be spellbound by his talents.

McIntosh and Haskell took the stage after a short break and all the rich experience acquired from their decades of performing and writing became immediately apparent as they launched into a series of bluesy guitar based songs with the odd instrumental piece thrown in. They performed two sets of folk, jazz, blues and good old fashioned rock 'n' roll, belted out from the stage in a performance that won them many admirers. Above all their guitar playing skills stood out and set them apart as the expert musicians they clearly are.

The Lazarenkos
The Lazarenkos "kicking ass"

Closing the evening was Greenock band The Lazarenkos, fronted by former songwriters club member Davy Nicol. They were playing on home turf on this occasion and so had the added safety net of support from friends in the audience, not that they needed it! .

The Lazarenkos are a great little band who kick ass live. The musicians who make up the band can really play, with good solid rhythm and some nice touches from the lead guitarist. They also have an accomplished singer/songwriter in lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Davy Nicol who sang a number of his own compositions including 'Dead End Factory'.

The Lazarenkos ended the evening in style and gave the local girls an excuse to get up and dance to some original music as well as some covers, which included Beatles tunes, and surprisingly even Suzanne Vega's 'Luka'.
