Since the day I first saw the e34 5-series I knew I had to have one. Of course I didn't know it by name yet or chassis code, but I knew BMW. Then I knew 525i and 530 540. Being a youngster I wasn't too foolish, I knew I wanted the bigger numbers. The largest number of that body style was the 540. Then I heard about the M5. Holy crap! That was another story and a car way out of my league so I'll have to leave that one alone. But anyways the 540 and e34 gave way to the next generation body which although a very sexy automobile the e34 generation is what had me hooked. So I start checking it out. It's got a V8 motor and not too heavy of a car, not too big either as I usually don't like the mammoths. So I'm thinking big V8 from the 7 series with a lighter body; man it can move. A bit more checking though and I find that the V8 had some sulfer problems which could lead to a pricey rebuild. BMW replaced some of the engines and fixed the problems under warrenty, but there were some that didn't make it. A little more checking and the 540 wasn't out until the mid-life of the generation 1993-1996. So the previous largest car was the 535 from 1988-1992. It had a larger 6-cylinder motor, bigger than in any 3-series. It's okay to have this motor though because of weight and handling. Being a smaller, lighter motor, it should have better front/rear weight distribution which means better handling than the front heavy V8 which means more fun. The power numbers make me still consider the 540's M60 with 280hp 295 ft*lbs so much more from just .6 liters displacment over the 535's M30 with210hp and 225 ft*lbs. I will be getting either the 535 or 540 because the 540 badge on the back still looks cooler !! I love German engineering and BMW comes through every step of the way. It is loaded with amenites, built like a brick, drives like a dream, and hugs you when you sit inside. I don't even want to call them seats, rather I'll say breasts, so comfy, nice to look at, and firm. You fit in them like a boob fits in your hand, no voids and no pressure points. For these reasons I will be putting one of these in my garage. |
