My father calls me a school teacher, I call myself an educator and my mom says I have enough education to choke a horse. I work at East Valley High School where I am the lead teacher for the Business, Finance and Marketing academy and I am currently teaching Business Law.

This web site was created for students, by students in hopes the site will help other students achieve their highest potential. You will be able to review your class syllabus and know what it is we are trying to achieve in class. You will also find the information you need to complete all of your assignments. Also included are grading criteria so you can receive the grade you are striving for. There are also samples of assignments so you can get a visual of what the end product will look like and view samples of student work. All of your work should be saved in your briefcase in an organized manner.

Introduction to Computers

Investigate careers in the field of technology and the application of technology within fields. Learn to touch type and input numerical data and manage files. Learn how to create professional documents for your classes using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher. Keep track of your grades (so you always know where you are on your path of where you want to be). Track your eating and activities so you can increase your personal well-being. Create financial statements such as budget which will help you plan for your future. Create professional looking outlines, essays research papers and presentaions.


Information Processing

Build on top of the foundation you built in Introduction to Computers. Refresh your keyboarding skills and then move forward by completing Numbers and Symbols and Skillbuilders in the Micro-Type Pro program. Practice word processing and increase your research, word processing and writing skills. Also learn how to create sales and marketing publications such as business cards, letterheads, brochures, poster and flyers. Increase your spreadsheeting skills by creating, reading and interpreting and communicating data through charts and tables.


Introduction to Business Careers

Learn the basics of all businesses and then investigate five that are of interest to you. We will share our discoveries with each other and other classes on campus. Learn and practice business vocabulary and professional compusure. You will be able to describe basic service industries, travel professions, manufacturing industries and compare and contrast these careers. You will take an inventory of your skills, aptitudes and interests and research on career that best fits and compare this career to two others. lastly you will indentify the steps you need to take to break into that career and the costs associated with such.for periods 2,3,4,5, and 6 you guys will have a guess speaker From The Business o Fashion.



Business Math

Math is used in businesses around the world on a daily basis. You need to have an understanding of what numbers mean in a variety of industries. You will also learn how personal math that you will use the rest of your life. How do you calculate income? How about your tax return? How much can you afford for college or an apartment? I will also show you how algebra helps business plans, grow and sustain a profit over time. Math is more interesting that you think - wait until you are done with this class!! For help try useing



Business Law

What's Law? What's Common Law? What's Business Law? What is real property or intellectual property? Who are the Supreme Court Justices?



Business Organization

How is a business organized? What documents do you need to fill out to pay employees? How do you manage employees? How to calculate payroll or keep a checking account? How do you organize all of those important documents and information needed to make money in your own business (or someone else's)? Learn the answers to these questions and have fun looking at business from different perspectives. Your final project in this class is a business plan!



Business English Communications

Effective verbal and written communication is essential in the business world. You can be great, but unless you can communicate to others what you plan to do, what you are doing, what you can do in the future, what you want to do and why, you will not more forward into an industry or within the industry. Learn to say what you mean and mean what you say...communicate your thoughts, plans and ideas. The flip side of Business English is body language and composure...we will practice this as well. You will also learn about careers in the business industry that focus on writing for others such as journalism and manuals, including creating forms so employees will folow procedures and policies. Of course the goal - in a business sense all of the skills you acquire in this class will help when you are in a position to help a business increase business; quality, efficiency and effectivenes.



Accounting 1A

Learn how to open "books" for a service company and keep track of all business transactions for an entire accounting cycle. You will complete chapters 1-10 in the Accounting I book. For each chapter you will outline the chapter, complete the study guide and problems in your workbook and then take a test. After completing chapter 10 you are ready to do the "packette" which is the accounting for a "business" from opening the business through the end of the first accounting cycle. It includes preparing the finacial statements and preparing the books to start the next accounting cycle. More fun that you might think - math is not essential - some love it - some hate it - try it out and find out.



Accounting 1B

Now that passed Accounting 1A, and enjoyed it, you can sign up for Accounting 1B. You will complete chapters 11-19. The class runs the same way as Accountign 1A except you learn how to keep the books for a company that produces a product - such as a manufacturing shop. In addition you will help Accountign 1A students. After you finish this class you will receive a certificate of completion and be recommended for an accountign job within the community and a certificate for a request for college credit for Accounting 1A in the California college/university systems.



Accounting 2A

One of the more interesting classes in accounting - you learn to discuss statements and make plans based on your interpretation of the fiancial statements. This class is called Managerial Accounting at the college level and continues deeper into the world of accounting. Guest speakers, job shadowing and internships are available at this level. You will of course complete chapters 1-8 in the Accounting II text and workbook. In addition you will supervise the Accounting 1A and 1B students and you will review and write synopsis for real financial statements for local businesses.



Accounting 2B

When you are at this level you are well into analysis of where money is, what it is being used for, when it is needed, why is it needed....decisions are made for long term company growth and for the maintenence of adequate cash flow levels in a manufacturing industry. You will be present at the Board of Directors meetings and will present budgets and other suggestions and ideas you have to the Board, based on the finacial statements. you will answer the Board Members' questions. Upon completion of this course you will receive a second certificate of completion and be granted another request for credit for Accounting 1B at the California college/university systems.



Lodging I

Complete Lodging I textbook and workbook. Field trips are included and very important - you must visit motels and hotels during the semester on your own or with your family and/or friends and report back to the class. We will use this information in class discussions. Job shadowing and internships are available for entry level positions at local motels and hotels.



Lodging II

Complete Lodging II textbook and workbook. Job shadowing, internships and scholarships are available. One student per year can be recommended for the scholarship



Travel & Tourism I

Travel and Tourism is a top industry around the world. A fasniating and fun field to get into as a career. You will be able to plan and budget trips for individuals, families, preformed groups and business professionals. You will practice finding prices and determing best times and fits to meet the needs of your clients. Of course we will calculate profit! Lastly, you will make yourself available during predesignated times to answer travel questions for students and teachers on campus.



Travel & Tourism II

Go deeper into the travel & tourism industry and related careers, identifying tasks you need to be capable of accomplishing in order to succeed in this industry. Prepare trips and work with the Viking Zone Sales Department who will sell your trips to teachers, students, other schools and the outside community needs. Lastly you will make yourself availble at designated times to help students on campus with geography and cultural questions to help them understand and suceed on their social studies courses.

Entrepreneurship

Some people work for others, some have jobs and some have careers. Other people, entrepreneurs have ideas, plans and execute those plans. Those who have succeeded in starting a business and accomplished the ever so difficult task of keeping their business open, running and profitable are the people we will listen to and read about. You will be able to identify their character and the qualities these people posess along with the work ethics they live by. You will also be able to describe the steps to open your own business. You will read and complete the work in the Entrpreneurship book and write and present a business plan in both written and verbal formats. lastly, we will look at the Viking Zone and its mission statement and history and then formulate what its short terms and long term goals should be, of course based on when and why it was opened and if it meet the goals it was shooting for and why.



Web Design I

Learn how to design and program a web site for a client to meet the needs of their customer. We will also look at careers and build sound computer skills as well as touch typing. We will look into the hosting of web sites and software packages available. Create your own homepage and link it to some of your favorite web sites. You will get to create your own web site and as a group create or support a web site for a Monroe teacher or program. Those who earn a "C" or better can enroll in a second semester - Web Design II.

You will upload your clients website and then teach them how to keep it updated after you gradute from this class and/or school....


Internet Publishing 1A

Continue learning how to create web sites and build your digital portfolio with HTML, Frontpage and MacraMedia Flash and DreamWeaver. Your Digital Portfolio will consist of your best or favorite works from English, Social Studies, Math and Sciences classes here at Monroe. You will include a five-paragrgh essay to show the world you know how to write and communicate in a written format, very important!!!! You will also include a spreadsheet and/or chart/gragh and a PowerPoint presentation for internet end-users. You will script and upload a Training Video for the Zone or other community business or a marketing video for a small learning community, class or program on campus. Lastly, you will include motivational sayings, short paragraghs, poem or short story that include all of the Power Words found on the Monroe web page. Make this as creative and fun as possible!

Learn how to create the most awesome senior and professional protfolio. You will utilize several types of media and programs such as Publisher, Frontpage, MacraMedia Flash and DreamWeaver. Your Digital Senior Portfolio will be aligned with the senior portfolio due in the College Office. Multi Media Production 1B

Three projects will be planned, completed and presented. One project for a teacher in the Business Academy, one project for a program on campus and the last project will be developed on an individual basis.


Sales

Use your Introduction to Computer and/or Information Processing skills to sale products and help with fundraisers on campus. A workbook goes along with this hands-on course and includes reading, writing, excel. Hone your professional voice and attitude as you will make "sales calls" to community business to illicite their support of our own Viking Zone - a full reprograhgic Business Center - run by students! Read current sales reports and make business decisions and find out how to sell...sell...sell...A real skill that could easily land you a job after high school or a foundation for business and humanities classes in college.
