Laurie Brettingham - the author
Laurie Brettingham in his office.
Laurie Brettingham has written two books about the Second World War covering the stories of two RAF radio units who were part of the secret radio battle waged against the Axis powers. Each book gives an accurate picture of the times by combining first-hand accounts supplied by many of the people involved with extensive research of records.

His first book '
Beam Benders, The Story of No. 80 (Signals) Wing RAF 1940-1945' describes the work, largely defensive, of the unit set up to combat the serious threat to the UK of Luftwaffe attacks from occupied Europe.

His second book '
Even When the Sparrows are Walking' covers the work of No. 100 (Bomber Support) Group RAF and the part they played in the Allied bomber offensive upon occupied Europe from 1943-1945.

Laurie attended BBC White City  to provide information on the activities of No. 80 Signals Wing and No. 100 Group RAF for the BBC website 'The People's War'.  The aim of this project is to create a database covering the history of units engaged in the Second World War.  In addition to the general study of the history of this period, it is hoped that it will also be of benefit to those studying family history.
