In the Second World War, in 1943, Bomber Command was paying a heavy price in both men and aircraft for its offensive against German-occupied Europe. In an effort to help to reduce this it was thought advisable to set up a specialist radio countermeasures unit in support of the Main Force bombers to operate against the highly-efficient German night defences which had strong electronic components. Thus was No. 100 Group formed. It was a unique creation; in the words of its AOC, Air Vice-Marshal Addison, 'a strange conglomeration'. For the first time in the R A F bomber and fighter elements were successfully blended together into one Group, and American units were absorbed into an R A F organisation for operational purposes. |
The three main aims in the formation of the new Group were:- 1) To reduce the losses of both aircrew and aircraft of the main bomber force. 2) To have in place aircraft and well-trained crews to provide radio countermeasures when the Alllies undertook the invasion of Europe. 3) The more efficient deployment of scarce scientific resources. |
In 'Even When the Sparrows are Walking', Laurie Brettingham uses extracts from official records and much anecdotal evidence, often from prominently-placed personnel, to describe the philosophy behind the creation of the Group and its operational success. |
