Our Mission

A devoted animal lover and radio personality, Pegeen Fitzgerald, now deceased, founded the Last Post Animal Sanctuary in 1982.  Situated on 37 acres in Falls Village, Connecticut, on the Housatonic River in the foothills of the Berkshires, the Last Post is a large, private animal sanctuary.  Built especially for cats, it is tailored to feline needs.

The cats live in five spacious rooms filled with couches and chairs for them to lounge and sleep on, exposed beams for climbing and perching, and lots of skylights and bay windows for sunning.

Along the outside of two of these rooms runs a one hundred foot sundeck, which the cats reach via cat doors and floor level windows.  All cats have access to breezeways and large porches.  Last Post insists that cats be fenced in or kept indoors to protect them, as well as wildlife.

Cats are caged only for a short time upon arrival at the Last Post.

All have spacious, comfortable enclosures of their own.  The remainder of the thirty-seven acres is left as a wildlife preserve.

The Last Post's primary purpose is to provide a safe, homelike surrounding for animals whose previous guardians have died or entered nursing homes.

Animals are left to the Last Post in wills, or special arrangements are made by people no longer able to care for their friends.
