| After we had gotten home and some days had gone by, I started hearing the song Drive on the radio. I remembered it from the concerts, and was taken aback at how beautiful it was, especially when I really listened the words. I hardly ever listen to 99x anymore, but I tuned into it just hoping to hear that song. I really liked it. It was the first Incubus single I had heard that really caught my ear. Thats when I decided that maybe I should give the band a chance. I went online and listened to some songs from S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and Make Yourself. I had gotten a setlist from the South Carolina show, so I listened to all the songs that they had played there. I was really impressed with everything I heard. Listening to those songs totally reminded me of the Deftones shows and the great time I had. I got chills and goosebumps hearing the really amazing openings to The Warmth and Nowhere Fast. When I listened to the songs from S.C.I.E.N.C.E., I was so surprised at how immensely different they were from the songs on Make Yourself. S.C.I.E.N.C.E. had more energy, more funk, and was definitely less mainstream and radio friendly. I had heard from long time Incubus fans constantly that they much more preferred S.C.I.E.N.C.E. over Make Yourself. I could see how some of them would be disappointed with Make Yourself. It is insanely different from S.C.I.E.N.C.E. but that by no means makes it bad. Anyway, I ordered S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and Make Yourself from Columbia House. But I couldn't get Drive out of my head, and I was dying to hear it again. So I just went out to the store and bought it, even though I had a copy coming my way. I listened to that CD nonstop, passing over Stellar and Pardon Me of course . I was amazed at how much I liked it. Incubus was indeed a really wonderful band, and now I understood what all the fuss was about. Not only was the music itself really amazing and different from most the stuff out there, but the lyrics were beautiful, insightful and thoughtful. Just the way Brandon chooses to phrase things is amazing. And while I enjoyed listening to the CDs, I really regretted not talking to the guys when I had the chance. When I went to New York for Christmas, I listened to Make Yourself, practically every day, over and over again. I listened to it while I was checking email, while I was playing Tekken, and of course while I was playing Solitaire. I made Jeazette watch the Little Nicky Special that I had taped that featured members of P.O.D., Incubus, and Deftones. Incubus did Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) with Deftones, and Brandon sang back up. It was a really great acoustic version of the song. Jeazette thought Brandon was really cute. Brandon is very good looking, but I haven't really developed a crush on him, which is good because the music is central. Brandon is more than just a pretty face. When I got back from New York, my package from Columbia House was waiting at home for me. I now had two copies of Make Yourself now, so I planned to give one to Jeazette. Anyhow, I started listening to S.C.I.E.N.C.E. At first I didn't particularly like it. I thought it was really weird, because it was so different from Make Yourself. And because I heard Make Yourself first, the Incubus from S.C.I.E.N.C.E. was not the Incubus I knew. But I started listening to it before I went to bed, and while I was doing my work, and in no time, I really loved it as well. |
