| It turned out that Melina and I were more alike then we at first had realized. Not only did she like bands like Soulfly, Deftones, but she also liked bands like The Cure, Duran Duran, and Depeche Mode. I had never met anyone my age who liked 80s new wave stuff as much as i did. But she learned to love that stuff from her older brothers. We also had shared a fairly unhealthy love, (obsession) with silverchair: she when she was 15, me when i was 18. The similarities just kept coming though. We have the same opinions on many things and stay away from drugs, drinking and smoking. It was nice to find someone who was so much like me. And talk about two people who say the exact same things at the same time constantly. Many say its just because we spent so much time around each other. Sometimes it would get so bad, that we would say to each other, "get out of my head!" because when one said one thing, the other was about to say it. One day I remember walking up the stairs coming back from dinner and she loooked down and said, "your shoes are undone." and at the exact same time we started singing, "Who do you need, who do you love..." and then we just stopped and looked at each other, like "oh my god!" we were singing the song undone by Duran Duran. I can't tell you how many times that has happened. But now we're used to it and we don't think much of it. Sometimes i'm sure that Melina and I are related somehow because it seems that we have such a strong connection with one another. Melina has been my concert going buddy and if it wasn't for Deftones, we would've never met. |

| The day of the show, we drove down to Lakewood feeling excited and anxious. We listened to Deftones on the way there, and couldn't wait to see them play. Since Deftones were headlining the second stage, they wouldn't be playing until later in the evening. So we spent the day watching bands at the second stage and searching around for the Deftones. At one point, I saw Steph walking backstage with one of the roadies. So I ran over to the fence which blocked off the backstage area and I yelled out his name. He smiled and waved back at me. Melina and I saw Chi off to the side of the stage talking to Mike from Incubus during the Mighty Mighty Bosstones set. We tried calling over to Chi, but he didnt hear us. We did manage to sort of meet Chino though. As he was walking by the backstage area towards the stage, someone called him over and he signed some autographs. I snapped a picture of him signing stuff. I was so excited cause I had never been that close to Chino Moreno before. He signed White Pony for Melina and I, but he didnt even look up at us because there were so many other kids around him. He was just going down the line. Then he had to leave to get ready to perform. When the Deftones finally played, they tour it up! We werent right up front of the stage but close enough. Melina and I called out to Chi and he saw us. He tried throwing a bottle of water to us but he threw it too far and it went behind us. That night they played back to school with John for 7dust. The reissued version of White Pony with Back to School on it was being released the following Tuesday. I had the track on a bootleg that I had gotten a few weeks earlier so I knew all the words. It was awesome hearing that new song and singing along to it. Anyway, Deftones did an AMAZING job at Big Day Out, and I couldnt wait to see them again. The next time we saw them was at the International Ballroom show on November 6th, 2001. You can read about it here. That was a pretty good show, except for the fact at the beginning of Incubus set, the railing broke. Melina and I didnt get hurt, but it scared the shit out of us. People die at shows when railings break so I was really freaked out. My friend Jeremy (who I didnt know at the time) was right next to me, and his finger got trapped under the railing when it fell. The top part of one of his fingers got cut off and he was just bleeding everywhere. They had to take him to the hospital. |
