One day, I was listening to 99x radio and they made the announcement that Deftones would be playing a show at the Tabernacle on July 20th. My god, I was so excited! Finally, I could get to see Deftones on their own tour. When I got online that day, Bert came on and said that he had some good news for me. I already know about Deftones, I said. But he had even better news for me. There were special limited editions of the White Pony album. I think they came in 3 different colors along with the regular one that was silver. Bert said hed tried to get me as many as he could. Also each best buy store got five CDs with a Deftones keychain and he said hed get one of those for me as well. But that was even the best news. He had been given 4 free tickets to the concert from his job and he said that I could have one. I almost died! It was just the coolest thing I had ever heard! It was so nice of him to get all that stuff for me. Anyway, on our first real date he handed me 3 copies of White Pony, red, black and silver, and one tickets to see Deftones in July. It was better than Christmas A few days after he had given me all that stuff, he also got me Deftones live CD. He said it would give me something to listen to on my plain trip to New York. What a sweet boy! I had to go to New York for my cousins wedding that year, and I remember the whole time I was there I was just so excited about see the tones. I couldnt wait. It would be so much fun. My father and I came home a week earlier than my mom because we had to work, and I wasnt gonna miss the Deftones!

The show was so awesome! It was so great seeing Deftones in a smaller venue. I even caught one of Abe's drunk sticks which totally made my night. At this point in my growing love for Deftones, i had all their albums, a few t-shirts, some posters and pictures on my wall. But i hadn't met them yet. And for the longest time, it seemed that everyone and their mamas' had met them, which made me really sad. Why hadn't i met them yet? Lots of people told me that they had met Chino and that he was so cool and chill. What was it gonna take for me to be one of the lucky ones? I knew i would just have to meet them someday. I had waited for a long time and it was something that Ireally wanted. In the fall of 2000, I became a freshman at the Univeristy of Georgia. It was bad enough being away from home, but i found out that most people there had no interest in Deftones. Most people seemed to like Phish, The Grateful Dead, Dave Matthews Band, R.E.M of course, and a slew of Indie bands. Who was going to share in my great love for Deftones. Little did i know that i would find my soulmate in music that year.

To make my room seem more home like, i put pictures of Deftones on my side of the room, and pictures of them on my side of the door. I figured they would be nice to look at on my way back from class. We had alittle writing board on our door, that people could write messages on. One day, i found a message on the board, addressed to me, from someone who liked my Deftones pictures. This person said that they had been at the Tabernacle show and had gotten a pic. Wow, another Deftones fan?! Awesome! So i wrote a message back to this person on my board, saying that i had been to the show as well and had gotten a drum stick. When she had signed her name, it looked like Melissa, but it turned out that it was Melina. It was weird because Melina is very close to my middle name, Menena. Anyway, Melina and I wrote to each other on the board for awhile until one day she finally dropped by to say hello. The rest is history. If i hadn't had those Deftones pictures on my door, Melina would've never stopped by and we may have never met. Or maybe we would've. It turned out that Melina was friends with this girl named Elaina. Melina went to high school with Elaina's sister Deana, so that's how she knew her. I also knew Elaina, because we went to the same high school, St. Pius. But she was a grade a head of me. But i always thought she was really cool. We had Psychology together when i was a junior and she was a senior so i got to know her a litlte better there. Anyway, she and I lived in the same dorm: i was on the second floor and she was on the fourth floor. But since Elaina knew me, she told Melina that I was really nice and smart and stuff. So melina may never have come to introduce herself to me if Elaina hadn't told her i was a nice person. It's funny how stuff works out huh? Anyway, thank god i met this girl because my freshman year would've been blah without her. And i would've never gotten what i has wished for for almost three years.
