Attractions of the Region |
The Normandy countryside is very attractive with many walks and cycle trails managed by the Regional Park. A number of the long distance Grand Randonee routes pass through the area. Within easy travelling distance by car are the following: Normandy Beaches - 1 hour 15 minutes The D day beaches are 50 miles away, inlcuding the Mulberry Harbour at Arromanche. The beaches are long, golden and sandy. Suisse Normand Countryside - 20 minutes An area of hills, gorges and rivers popular with walkers, fishermen, climbers and canoeists. Caen - 1 hour A wonderful range of shops and museums. The Abbeys inlcude the burial place of William the Conqueror. Falaise - 30 minutes Medieval castle which was the birthplace of William the Conqueror Le Mans - 1 hour 20 minutes Large and lively city with famous cathedral and racing circuit. Mont St.Michel - 1 hour 15 minutes Fantastic monastery is a world heritage site. Granville - 1 hour 15 minutes Seaside resort on the west coast of the Cherbourg peninsula Bayeux - 1 hour 15 minutes Tapestry, cathedral, unspoiled medieval city. Deauville and Trouville - 1 hour and 20 minutes Fashionable coastal resorts Alencon - 45 minutes Main town of the region with historic buildings and very large weekly market. Paris - 2 hours by Train from Briouze and Argentan There are trains direct to Paris. The journey is just over 2 hours and surprisingly cheap (2 adults and one child - family ticket - �57 return in May 2001) All roads are very quiet by UK standards. None of these journeys require use of toll roads. |
Food and Drink Normandy is renowned for its cider (pear and apple); Calvados,; cheeses (Pont l'Eveque, Livarot, Camembert and many more); fish and shellfish; beef. It is often the case that your entire meal can be made from local Norman produce - a difficult claim to make in the UK ! There are many restaurants within a few minutes- everything from Menu du Jour for 10 euros up to a Michelein starred resturant |
