‡ A Love that Lasts ‡
In Defense of Mamo-chan
It all started a long long time ago, a forbidden love between the Moon Princess and the Prince of the Earth. They lived in a prosperous and peaceful time, the Silver Millenium, and Princess Serenity would often sneak down to Earth to visit with Prince Endymion, even when she was scolded by her four guardian soldiers. There were others watching them as well, a jealous Earth woman named Beryl who was envious of Endymion's love for Serenity. She, along with many of the people of Earth, were being brainwashed by a being of Chaos, Queen Metallia. The earth people began to believe that the Moon Kingdom was somehow holding them back, and launched an attack, with Beryl at the head of it all. Beryl accuses Endymion of betraying the Earth when he tries to stop her attack, and slices through Endymion with her sword in front of Serenity. Devestated by the loss of her love, Serenity uses Beryl's sword and plunges it into her chest, taking her own life. After a long and costly battle, Queen Serenity finally seals away the evil Metallia deep inside the earth, but she was devestated by the loss of her only daughter and could not make the seal as strong as needed.. With her last ounce of dying strength, Queen Serenity used the power of her Silver Crystal to send all of her people to live a new life on earth, including her daughter and Prince Endymion so that they might have a chance of finding happiness together there.. With that, her strength fails, and she dies alone on the moon.
That is how their story begins. I've come across many SM fans that don't like Mamo-Chan, they say that he was mean to Usagi and acted like he was just sorta "stuck" with her because it was his destiny, not because he truly loved her.
I beg to differ. The manga story line is beautiful and romantic, and it's very obvious that Mamoru absolutely adores Usagi. It's nothing like the anime. Mamoru figures out who she is very early on, he picks on her a a few times, but that mostly has to do with the fact that he's noticed Usagi has a talking cat. There's one scene that is one of my very favorites. Usagi had fainted after healing people who's energy had been drained by Zoisite , and Mamoru brings her back to his apartment. She wakes up and realizes who he is when she sees his suit lying on the couch. He explains his need for the silver crystal, she tells him she is supposed to protect it. When she leaves his apartment, she realizes she still has the broken star pocket watch he's shown her......in the apartment, Mamoru pulls out the handkerchief Usagi dropped at the ball and kisses it. She kisses the pocket watch. Its soooooooo sweet!
There's so much more to it than that.....so much more, I can't even begin to get into it all. I would stongly suggest reading the manga to ANYONE who thinks that Usagi and Mamo chan's relationship is anything less than perfect. I don't believe I've ever read a better love story than theirs....nothing that has ever affected me in such a way. I could go to bed after reading it and curl into a happy warm ball of me and have stars shining in my eyes and dream of such things. I could envelope myself in their universe and feel like their lives were real. LOL, maybe this is because Naoko Takeuchi is such a wonderful writer, she just seems to draw you in and make all things seem possible. If you are interested in being drawn in, too, you can go to my manga section and read the first 2 volumes (acts 1-9 I think) and just see for yourself. And if you aren't moved by it, all I have to say is you must have a heart of cold, cold stone. (~_^)
