Magis

24 July 2006

We celebrate St. Ignatius day on July 31 and since I owe a lot to the guy, his kampon and his retreats, it is but fitting that the theme for this third edition of MFH revolve around him.

The common thread that weaves its way through most of the essays is magis. I'd like to think however, that magis is more than just the "more" we have come to associate with the word.

  • An essay found in Fr. Ferapont's Monasterium Tremendum simply entitled Magis argues that magis is not simply more effort but also a (complete) re-ordering of our lives to be more effective.

  • Two essays can be found in Father Goose's Nursery both on competence and cunning, arguing that it is not enough to do good but it is imperative for us to do good well. As Clever as Snakes was delivered before a High School Reading of Honors and Competence was read at a St. Ignatius day prayer service at the Gesu.

  • Shades of Grey asks more from adults who like to say Ang Kabataan ang Pag-asa ng Bayan.

  • Wonderland contains a meditation on St. Ignatius offering his sword as a surrendering of a dream for a life previously unimagined.

Still Waters finishes the three-part reflection on my name, this time discussing the consequences of being Leland Joseph.

Happy reading and happy St. Ignatius day to everyone!
