Today was our one-year anniversary! We can't believe how quickly time flies; it seems like just yesterday we were planning our wedding. And here we are a year later, relaxing on the Sapphire Princess heading to Alaska for some glacier-hugging fun. Today we spent the entire day at sea heading towards our first destination, Ketchikan (pronounced ket-che-can). We traveled north along the Vancouver Island coastline, expecting to enter U.S. waters by early the next morning. Alaska is in the Alaska Standard Time Zone, which is one hour behind the Pacific Time Zone. Wow, these guys get their own time zone? We should petition for California Standard Time Zone, where we have 17-hour days and 3 Saturdays. That would be cool. We slept in and celebrated our anniversary in style with the buffet breakfast in the Horizon Court. We ate typical Denny's stuff: eggs, bacon, sausage, French toast, etc. We walked around the ship and there's a lot to see. We checked out our pictures that were taken during embarkation. Of course, I had my eyes closed, so we didn't waste $19.95 on an 8 x 10. Can you imagine spending 20 clams on a picture? That's highway... er, high seas robbery! We did purchase a nice photo album for $8.95. In the Art Gallery Atrium, they were showcasing dozens of artwork (original and replica) that would be available during the Champagne Art Auction in the Explorer's Lounge. There were a couple of auctions during our cruise, but duplicate pieces were never up for bid at each one. The one that caught our eye (okay, my eye) was a Homer Simpson piece. Lana said she would let me bid on it, saying I could put it in my office (the one I would have if we had a house). I said I probably wouldn't want to pay more than $100-200. When I inquired about the reserve price (the minimum bid, to prevent a Picasso from selling for only $1.49 because no one else has the balls to bid against you), the Art Director informed me,"The original piece is worth 12 and the minimum bid is 5-40." Now ordinarily, I would have exclaimed,"Wow! 12 bucks and it's only starting at $5.40!" Fortunately for me, the person in front of me already had embarrassed himself with a "No, sir. That's eight hundred ninety-nine, not eight dollars and ninety-nine cents" faux pas, so I already knew that 5-40 meant five hundred and forty dollars. I kindly thanked the man for his information and sheepishly left the Art Gallery. We spent the rest
of our time lounging on the deck chairs and enjoying the fresh air.
It was "formal dress" for dinner tonight, meaning guys had
to wear a formal suit or tuxedo. We had our pictures taken, and I hoped
I didn't close my eyes this time. Dinner was excellent! We each had: We capped the night with a late-night movie, Rumor Has It. Let me be the first to say that Jennifer Aniston will always be Rachel Green no matter what other role she attempts to play, just like Adam Sandler is always Happy Gilmore and Rob Schneider is always Deuce Bigalow. Good thing it was free. |
