I recently started my first vegetable garden. I decided to experiment with the Square Foot Gardening method to see how it would work. So far so good! Not much is growing yet, but the peas and lettuce are looking great.

Dutch Oven Cooking

I'm not much of a cook, but even I can make something worth eating in a dutch oven. I have two ovens and I'm getting ready to experiment with some new recipes.

Birding

A friend of mine introduced me to the interesting pastime of bird watching. It's a lot of fun, and an intriguing challenge, to learn about different kinds of birds: how they look, sound, and act. Now I wish I had better binoculars and a nice camera to do some bird photography.

Geocaching

While I'm out birding, I often make sure I take time for another pastime of mine: geocaching. Geocaching is like a giant treasure hunt the world over. You use a GPS unit to track down caches of all sizes and types. One I found was a "rock" made out of resin with a hollow center where they had hidden the "treasure". It's great fun following the hints and seeing the creative containers people have come up with. One of these days I'll hide one of my own caches. As I said before, it is the world over. My nephews have done some geocaching in Japan and I plan to do some when I go to visit.

Movies and Television

Movies

I'm an old movie and musical fan. Anything with Cary Grant in it is guaranteed to bring a smile to my face, especially two wartime comedies called, Father Goose and Operation Petticoat. Julie Andrews is on a par with Cary Grant, as far as actors go. Considering they both started in vaudeville that isn't too surprising. I consider The Sound of Music to be one of the all time best musicals ever. And right behind it comes Singin' in the Rain with Gene Kelly and The King and I with Yul Brenner and Deborah Kerr.

Television

I don't even own a television and if I did I would only use it to watch the news and movies. That being said, I do like watching DVDs on my computer. Stargate SG-1 is my current favorite TV show, and I have managed to get all the DVDs so far. The Cosby Show is probably my favorite all time show, but I haven't even attempted to get the DVDs.
