| Chapter Three Jessica went through the next day in a daze. After she had told Kevin to leave she had broken down and cried most of the night. She loved Kevin, but not being able to be with him was killing her. I made the right decision, she thought. Its for the best. All day her phone had been ringing. Jessica refused to answer it. She knew it was Kevin and she didnt want to talk to him. She knew if she did she would take him back in a second. She needed someone she could depend on. Someone who would be there for her. Kevins job was too demanding and she wasnt sure if she could handle it right now. Jessica glanced at the picture on the end table. It was a picture of her and Kevin taken at their one year anniversary. She picked up the frame, studying it more closely. Why does it have to be this way, she murmured, running her fingers over the glass. Her eyes glistened, a fresh wave of tears threatening to over take her. It took three rings for Jessica to realize that someone was at the door. She just sat in her chair, making no effort to move. Giving up with the doorbell, the person outside started knocking. Assuming it was Kevin, Jessica just shut her eyes, hoping that he would go away. After a few minutes the pounding ceased and the slow creak of the door could be heard. Jess, I know youre here, a voice called into the house. Jessica noticed the voice belonged not to Kevin, but to her best friend Nick Carter. Great, just what I need, she thought. Nick walked through the foyer and into the living room where he found Jessica curled up in a chair. He and Jessica had been best friends for as long as either of them could remember. It was through Nick that Jessica met Kevin. When Nick went to the audition that got him into the Backstreet Boys, Jessica was there next to him. When she saw Kevin she knew immediately that she wanted to be with him. Thats a cute style youve got going there Jessi, Nick commented as he took in her pajama pants and baggy tee-shirt. Jessica didnt even acknowledge his presence. That scowl suits you well too, he joked. This time Jessica glared at him then turned around in the chair. Jess, you have to talk to me sometime. At that comment she got out of the chair and tried to maneuver her way around Nick. Her attempt failed as Nick quickly grabbed her arm as she tried to squeeze past him. Nickolas Gene Carter, by all that is holy, if you dont let me go I will make it so that you never have children, she seethed. As if he had been burned, Nick released his grasp on her arms. Woah, chill out girl. Im just here to help. Well I dont want it Nick. What I want is to be left alone, she cried. Jess, we leave the day after tomorrow. You have to talk to him before then. Is there a rule that says I do? No, Nick, I dont think so. Why are you being so stubborn? he questioned. Jessica looked at him like how dare he have the audacity to ask her that. He comes barging into her home and then thinks he can treat her like shes a two year old. After having been friends with her for so long he should know better then to question her like that when shes upset. Im being stubborn? Im being stubborn? What the hell do you mean Im being stubborn? Well why wont you talk to Kevin? Refusing to talk to him seems a pretty stubborn thing to me, he challenged. Nick, Kevin and I are through. Why cant you accept that? she asked. Why cant you accept that? he shot back. What do you mean? she asked. If you accepted that you two were finished you wouldnt be this upset. You still want to be with him and you know it. Just do me a favor and stop denying yourself. Im going to leave now before you actually carry through on one of those threats. Ill see you in two months Jess, he replied and walked out the door. |
