Chapter Two

Jessica.  He hardly ever called her Jessica.  It was always Jessi or Jess or some other pet name.  He never called her Jessica.

The smile slowly faded from her face.  The light in her eyes was replaced by worry.

Is -- is there something wrong Kevin? she asked, suddenly nervous.

Our new album just went triple platinum in Europe, he said.

The worry fleeted from Jessicas eyes when she heard this.  A smile formed on her perfect lips.

Kevin, thats great! she exclaimed.

Theres more.

Jessicas confident smile deflated slightly.

Our manager gave us the option to go on a short, two month, promotional tour in Europe.

Gave you the option?  As in you could if you all wanted to, but you dont have to if you didnt? she asked hopefully.

Basically, yes, Kevin answered.

Well, you told them no right?  I mean, you just got done touring, her eyes pleaded with his.

The sadness of disappointing her crept into his voice as he answered.

Its good for the album, he reasoned.

Kevin!  You just came back to me.  I dont want to lose you again, she replied.

Youre not losing me, Jess, he took her hands in his.

When do you leave? she asked, her voice cracking slightly.

This was the part Kevin dreaded the most.  Three days.

Jessica felt as if someone just told her the world was coming to an end.

Three days! Kevin, thats ridiculous!

Im sorry Jess, was all he could manage to say.

Sorry?  Kevin, you could have told them no, she said, the anger starting to rise in her voice.  I understand this is important to your job, but I thought I was important too.

Kevin looked at her in shock.

How can you say youre not important to me? he questioned.

It just seems that you always put your job before your life, she replied.

My job is my life, Kevin defended.

Well Im not part of your job.  Does that mean Im not part of your life then? Jessica asked, tears forming behind her eye lids.

Kevin couldnt believe he was hearing this.

Of course not!  I want you in my life more than anything, he exclaimed.

Then dont leave!  If this promotional tour was that important they wouldnt have made it optional, she stated.  After a pause she added, I need you Kevin.

Kevins heart sank as he looked into her deep green eyes.  He hated leaving her, but he had no choice.  He knew what would happen if he turned the management down.

Im sorry, Jess, he whispered, barely audible.

Jessica stared at him wide-eyed.  It took her a moment to regain her composure before she replied.

Well if thats the way you feel, then maybe you should just go, she tried to make her voice strong, but the pain was still evident.

Im sorry? Kevin wondered if he had heard right.

I said, maybe you should go, she got up and headed to the door.

But Jess, I- he started.

Kevin, Jessica cut him off, Please.

She opened the door and stood waiting.

Slowly Kevin go up.  This has to be a bad dream, he thought.  He made his way to the door and stepped out, like he was stepping out into oblivion.

Making one last attempt to keep his girlfriend he turned around and opened his mouth, but Jessica cut him off again.

Goodbye Kevin.  And slowly the door shut.
