Chapter One

Perfect, Jessica said, lighting the last candle.

She stepped back and admired her work.  A table was set for two.  There was a white linen table cloth covering it, a vase of fresh, white roses as a center piece.  The soft light from the candles scattered about the room created a warm glow.  She walked over to the oven and pulled out the casserole she had baked.  After placing the casserole on the table she sat down, looking expectantly at the door.

Where is he? she thought, glancing at the clock.

His plane was getting in at seven and he said he would stop over as soon as he got in.  It had been almost four months since they had seen each other.  The tour had been difficult for both of them.  Jessica had prepared dinner as a surprise.

She was about to call his cell phone when she heard the front door open.  She peeked around the corner and saw him standing in the pale light.

Kevin! she exclaimed, running over to him.

Kevin smiled as the small, dark haired girl ran to him.

He scooped her into his arms and kissed her gently.  Letting her go, he stepped back and looked into her sparkling green eyes.

Its been way too long, he said as she nuzzled her head in his chest.

He held her close to him, reacquainting himself with her smell, her body, her touch, her everything.

Slowly she pulled herself away from him.

I have a surprise for you, she said.

Oh really? he asked, eyebrows raised.

Shut your eyes, she smiled playfully.

Kevin looked at her skeptically.

Please, she begged him.

Reluctantly he closed his eyes.  Jessica took his hand and led him into the kitchen.

Double checking to make sure that everything was perfect, she gave Kevin permission to open his eyes.

Slowly his eyes fluttered open and he gazed at his surroundings.  His mouth opened slightly in awe of it.

Jessi, this is beautiful, he whispered.

Im glad you like it, she said.  Have a seat.

After you, he said, pulling out a chair for her.  After she took her seat, Kevin sat down across from her.

The next few moments they ate in silence, peacefully enjoying the others company.  Every few seconds Kevin would steal a glance at Jessica.

I have to tell her, he thought staring remorsefully at his girlfriend.  I just dont want to break her heart.

Kevin? Jessica started, breaking through his thoughts.

Regaining his composure he replied, Yes honey?

Im really glad youre home, she smiled at him.

So am I, he replied genuinely, but his mind was racing.

How do I break it to her, he thought. Shell be devastated. He looked up at her again, her eyes shimmering in the candle light.  Shes  so beautiful, I cant bear to be away from her.

What are you thinking?

Her question caught him off guard.  He almost choked on his wine.  Sputtering slightly he replied, What?

What are you thinking? she asked again.

Kevin just looked at her for a second.  Finally deciding on what he had to do, he answered.

Jessica, we need to talk.
