We are in the midst of planning and soliciting donations for our Fundraiser Auction scheduled for 7:00 pm July 14th at the Mercer Island VFW Hall. We already have some excellent trips and items lined up, including four days and three nights at Leonard's Landing Lodge in Yakutat Alaska, a paradise for river salmon fishing and big halibut and more salmon in Yakutat Bay. Members are also generously donating day trips on Puget Sound and Lake Washington, which were very popular items at our previous auction several years ago. We will also auction off two Salmon University classes, so it should be a great event. It's not too early to put this on your calendar, and we hope to see members from other PSA chapters there, along with the public.
On the more immediate horizon, Charlie and Patty Fahsholtz will host their annual shellfish outing on the beautiful shores of Hood Canal on June 11th. As has been our previous practice, the group will all meet at Belfair and then caravan out to the Fahsholtz's secluded beach. Information will be passed out at our next regular meeting on June 9th, or you can call Rich Elliott, Roger Urbaniak or Bob Secrest for information (phone numbers above).
Some good fishing reports from members are beginning to crop up, led by Bob Faine's hefty steelhead taken on the Bogachiel and Dave Powell's impressive 57-lb. Puget Sound halibut taken off the west coast of Whidbey Island. Dave's catch was made all the more interesting by the fact that it was taken from a 14-ft. aluminum car-topper on saltwater spinning gear. Fishing for halibut with spinning gear is a bit unusual -- but you can't argue with success!
Several chapter members were present for the May 14th crab rally and Fish & Wildlife Commission crab season meeting in Tumwater. The overall PSA turnout was very impressive. Herb Ahten, member of the crab advisory committee, was among the Lake Washington members in attendance. A show of numbers and persuasive public testimony are necessary to influence the political/regulatory process, and they both were present in abundance at the Saturday meeting. Let's keep the momentum going and not give up on the system!
Our chapter's next regular meeting falls on June 9th when our featured speaker will be the other Tom Nelson, co-founder of PSA and Salmon University. Tom will talk about Catching Sockeye in Lake Washington, always a hot topic around this time of year. As always, the public is invited along with other PSA chapter members. Hope to see you there!
