~How Kilara Obtained Nexia~

Kilara stomped angrily around her room, tossing clothing and items haphazardly in a failed attempt to pack. She couldn't believe that her father was just sending her away! Couldn't he just modify the rules and ancient tradition somewhat for her? He was, after all, the King. So what if protocol DEMANDED that she go. He didn't have to listen to it ... the world was meant to be changed, and they were royalty after all. He ruled... couldn't he change things for her?  She sighed aloud. Such was the life of the royalty of Comeltum.

Comeltum was constantly at war, and the realm was chaotic at best . Therefore it was common for royalty to maintain  a secret place- a hideout of sorts for the royals when they were in great peril. It was also customary for them to send away their heirs when they reached the age of 19, shortly before they were of age to rule so that they could not become the target of assasins or kidnappings. Since Kaodin had no heirs but his daughter, Kilara, she was to be queen after him, and therefore reign supreme over the realm. And for safety's sake, he had decided to send her away...alone...to their hidden fortress deep within the woods with only her handmaidens  and a few selected guards to keep her company. And she was to remain there for two more years, until she reached the age of queenship.

When the race of the Humans stepped up to the throne in their particular province, her father had been just a child. The Humans were later joined by the Nymphs when her father married her mother, and Kilara had been the result, the only child born during her father's reign. Her mother, who had died at childbirth, had left a frail version of herself behind... the child had her mother's grace and fine features, yet her father's proud carriage and brilliant mind, when it came to leading a nation. Yet she was weak from a sickness that she had never fully overcome, and that still remained uncured. As she grew older, the "sickness" made itself less and less apparent, but occasionally she was still plagued by it, and had, on those occasions, been thought to be on her death bed. Since each province ruled independently, there was a lot of discord among the races, yet each sought to marry their offspring off at an early age to assure alliances among the provinces. Kilara's father had sought the same thing, only he had fought more so for it with his daughter's health being in question. Kilara had stubbornly refused all suitors, and although her strength waned and recovered over the years, she still maintained that she would not marry for political reasons.

She sighed again just thinking about it, but didn't have too long to dwell on the past, for her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door. Angrily, she flung it open and stood in the doorway, hands on hips and legs akimbo, looking quite the sulky child rather than the usually composed princess that she was.

"I'm not to be disturbed! Who wants me at this hour?" she snapped. The page cowered somewhat, shocked into stunned silence. Usually his mistress was much more calm and collected, and he was obviously terrified of her ire.

"Your.. your father... mi-milady," he stammered. She sighed audibly.

"I apologize Yavin. It's not your fault. I shouldn't have spoken to you thus," she said, forcing a small, soft smile.  "Will you accept my apology?" He nodded in response, grinning shyly. She nodded as well. "Thank you. Could you please tell my father that I'll see him shortly?" Yavin bowed low and exited, rushing to do his lady's bidding.

She heaped a few more articles of clothing into her luggage before gathering her skirts. She strode down the hall until she reached her father's offices. She knocked once  but didn't wait for a reply. Instead, she flung open the door, her fit of pique returning at the sight of her father.

"What's so important that it could not wait until tomorrow? I will be leaving then anyway," she said angrily, cutting each word off brutally. Her father looked up from his scrolls, looking miserable, hurt shining in his overly bright eyes.

"Isn't it enough that I wanted to see you and say goodbye?" he asked quietly. "I'll miss the company of my only child, Kilara. I thought that would have been obvious." She was struck by his look and instantly felt sorry. Stepping up the guilded platform, she sat next to him, giving him a soft kiss on the cheek.

"I will miss you too, but we will be together again soon enough," she said, trying hard to be brave. Two years was a long time in isolation. He nodded.

"I also called you here because I wanted to give you something," he said. She watched as he reached.towards the fire, and she curiously wondered why he was bothering to stoke the embers. She gasped aloud when he thrust a mailed fist into the glistening coals.

"Father!" she exclaimed. "Whatever are you doing?" She looked down at the hand that he had removed from the flames.  It was, oddly enough, unhurt, and cradled in his arms was a strange shape. She peered curiously over his shoulder.  "Whatever is that?" she asked.

"It's a Clarus Dragon egg," he said calmly, rotating it so that the flames flickered over the rainbow patterns just so, illuminating the colours brightly. He looked at her solumnly. "I knew you would be lonely. These eggs are very rare, but I managed to find one for my only daughter as company. Treat it well. It will make an excellent companion, one that you can train and learn from.  And I know you will find it more company than the others." He gently placed it in her arms. "Take care of it." She nodded, shocked at being given a gift so rare. She had only heard of the dragons in legend,  and that's all she thought they were- a myth.  She cradled the egg in her arms, and gazed at it warmly, already attached to the living thing that it housed. She grinned at her father, tears glistening in her eyes.

"It's the best gift I've ever gotten, and it's most fitting. I can't thank you enough," she whispered. "It's all I could have asked for."
