Lain is the main character of the show. She is extremely quiet and shy and keeps to herself. Lain only has three friends and only one of them cares for her and is a real true friends (Alice). Everyone at Lain's school uses navis (computers). Lain doesn't know much about navis and very rarely touches her own navi. All that changes one day when Lain is checking her e-mail form a class mate who recently committed suicide (Chisa), and in the e-mail it says that she isn't really dead, she just left her phycial body for the wired. Chisa also tell Lain that she too should join the Wired. That same night Lain asked her father for a new navi, happy for his daughter's new interest in navis, he buys her one of the best navis avaible in the market. As time passes Lain becomes more involved in the Wired.
