���� Who IS Lain
When we first see Lain she appears to be a normal girl. She is very conserved, shy, and goes minds stuff to herself. As the series goes on we find that Lain changes in to different personalities. From real life Lain who is shy to Lain who's no all there to a super confident Digital Lain.

Lain has three main selves that has been shown to us at least. They all seem to spell their names different ways.

Real World Lain: (Not the Series)
She is a shy, quiet and likes to collect things. She doesn't really talk much to others and is extremely naive. She spells her name in Kanji Characters.

Digital Lain:
This Lain is the exact opposite of the Real World Lain. She is� very confident about herself. She is very stubborn and very aware. Her emotions aren't really anything to her she more likely to go on information then she is to go on her emotions the odds are like 1 to 10. She spells her name in Katakana Characters.

Lain of the Wired:
This Lain looks and acts very different form her other personalities. She looks burnt out like she has been on drugs. Her eyes are always half shut like she looks and acts like she half asleep or very relaxed. She Spells her name in English characters. She is well in other words just a "creation" of the knights - The Nights are a group of mysterious hackers that like to cause trouble in the Wired - to try and stop lain form learning and using her true power. By controlling Lain of the Wired, The Knights trick and influence people who might seek the true Lain as some kind of "God of the Wired" She manly used to cause trouble. Lain's physical body appears on a projection to a blind mankind.

���� What is Lain
It all starts at Tachibana labs where scientist Masamei Eiri and Iwakura Yasou are working on an new advanced software system. This new system is made to be the ultimate method of accessing and communicating info across The Wired, related after Ted Nelson's Xanadu Project. the system would provide the ability to access data very fast through a net of hyper links.Beng a hardware company after all, Tachibana, wants to build devices that well help humans in their search for information.

Since this is Tachibana's view. Masmi Eiri has a different view. He has studied and researched data on KIDS project and the Schumann Resonance and believes that humans with the collective unconscious without aid of devices. Concinced of the power of this communication ability, Masami secretly implants software which allows device-less connection into Tachibana's latest communication procedures.

When Tachibana finds out that with out devices their is no business for their products and when they discover that Masami was behind it they fire Masami. However, Masami master the ability to communicate inside the collective unconsciousness, having no need for his body he commits suicide. Believing that he is the first ot evolve to the point thinks that he has become a god, and wants to recruit other humans to join him.

Tachbana, maybe out of guilt or maybe out of greed because of Masami unleashing the protocols in the Wired, he creats a counter-measure to fight Masami's influence. This counter-measure is Lain. It is Tachibana's hope that through Lain Masami's protocols will be rewritten or deleted. They think if software, which normaly has no "flesh", it can learn the importance of existance on a physical plain, people will be prevented from following Masami into the Wired.

Tachibana, and not Masami Eiri, creates Lain, a sophisticated bio-organism or "homologous by artificial ribsome" which can interact in the world as a normal human being. She was created as a middle-school girl in the Iwakura family is assigned to "raise" her. Later in the series, when Masami confronts her in the Wired, he tries to convince her that he is her creator and trys to trick her to his side...
