--- ATHARVANA VEDAM

IV  CANTO – 16TH CHAPTER – 8TH SLOKA

God (VARUNA-NARAYANA) is THAT  IN WHICH EVERYTHING GATHERS;

He is the COMPATRIOT  (fellow citizen);

He is the STRANGER;

He is DIVINE;

HE IS ALSO MAN.

            Praise be to the name of God.  There are many religions.  The major religions are Hinduism, Christianity and Muslim.  So we cannot understand these religions unless we understand when they started.  It did not start together.  In the beginning man started worshipping everything what he was afraid of.  When he heard thunder, “Iyyoh, this must be God, this makes us afraid.”  So he made thunder as God.  Then he found out fire is burning everything; so it is better than that God, because this is burning everything.  Then he called fire as God.  Then he found out that a little water can quench the fire.  Then he said, “Water must be God.”  Then he found out that darkness is terrible; so darkness must be God.  Then he found out, a little light is driving that big darkness.  Then he found out that light is better than darkness.  Then he started thinking more and more towards God.  How to meet God?  But man never tried to meet God.  No time in the history of the world ever man said, “I’ll go behind God.”  All men have sinned and come short of the glory of God.  It is only the search of God after man.  In the Bible it says, “Adam, where are thou?”  He wanted Adam to be with Him, but this fellow had disappeared and gone to something else.

            So, man was not searching God.  God was searching man.  It is like a mother searching for her child.  Oh, where has he gone?  He didn’t come so far.  See that prodigal son story.  He was searching for the boy daily.  But when he returned, that made him happy.  So, when man turns towards God, it makes God very happy!  So there are so many books also on these religions.  The Christian people will say, “There is no other religion which can save you, except our religion.”  The Muslims will say, “Except Allah, nobody can save anybody.”  Hindus will say, “Narayana!” Whereby there are three Gods.  Then everybody thought that they can become gods.  So any religious man became a god.  The devil wants to take us away from God.  But God wants to take us to that one God.  But it is said that God is a spirit.  So, it has to come into a form.

            Now, you must think that you are all Hindus.  That means you do not know the Bible, or you do not know any religion, but only Bhagavad Gita; that I am a Hindu who is trying to tell you about Bhagavad Gita.  Then only you’ll understand Bhagavad Gita.  For a moment you forget Koran and Bible and everything, and then that you are learning Bhagavad Gita.  And ultimately you will find out that Bhagavad Gita and Koran and Bible all written by – came from the lips of one Master.

            Suppose I go to a typist.  I have five typists, I tell them to type these letters.  Then immediately Mr.Prabhuvaram types one letter, Antony types and Wilson will type.  Wilson will say, “This is my letter.”  Antony will say, “This is my letter.”  Prabhuvaram will say, “This is my letter.”  Reddy will say, “This is surely my letter, because it was typed in my typewriter which had one part broken, and that you can see in the points (stops) in the letter; and so that is my letter.”  But at the end there will be someone to sign that letter.  All these letters come to me and I’ll sign, “Bro.Lawrie – Bro.Lawrie – Bro.Lawrie”; I sign.  So, to whom the lettters belong?  It is not Reddy’s or Prabhuvaram’s or Wilson’s, but it belongs to me.  So I sign it as if I am writing.  Because we did not know that it was spoken by one person, they do not understand the Bible or Koran or Bhagavad Gita or any spiritual books.  So, any person… A Christian will say, “Nothing is equal to the Bible.”  Another Hindu will say, “Bhagavad Gita came from heaven.” – Because, they can never think of God in the earth.  It was not falling from heaven, it was given from heaven.  So, now for a moment we become Hindus, then you can become again whatever religion you want to.  That is change of religion.

            After reading Bhagavad Gita, then you’ll come to the understanding, that there is one God for everybody.  So when man wanted to worship God…  First of all, why should man worship God?  Do you mean to say without worship He (God) can’t live?  Do you mean to say, by our worship only He can live?  He is always there.  But we can find out, when man comes to a position in which he cannot solve anything in this earth, then He comes down to reveal to us.  Now I’ll talk to you something about Bhagavad Gita.  The glory of our Gita.  Because we must say, “You are a Hindu.”  I’m a Hindu, so I must say, “The glory of the Gita.”  The Bhagavad Gita contains divine words from the lips of God Himself.  The Muslim will say, “No, no, no, Koran came from the mouth of God.”  But the Bible says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth from the mouth of ‘Bible’ it doesn’t say. – From the mouth of God!”  His glory is infinite, unlimited.  Even the thousand headed serpent, whose back forms the couch of God Vishnu, cannot depict the full glory.  So it has become a great book.  As a scripture, the Gita embodies the supreme spiritual mystery and secret.  So, we’ll come to the first sloga.

            First of all the Mahabaratha war – who knows about it?  Do you know that, Krishnamoorthy?  (Points to a brother sitting in the audience with that name.)  You have been named Krishnamoorthy, and then you must know it.  Mahabaratha war was between whom?  Pandavas and Kauravas.  This is a war between them.  So many people were involved in this war.  It was not a story.  It happened in India.  It was a state like the present times.  Just like all the Tamilians are killed in Ceylon – you know that is a Ramayana story.  Again Tamils are in the point of being destroyed by Ravana.  Then, they used bows and arrows, now they are using machine guns.  So the Ramayana is happening right near India.  But same thing like in Bhagavad Gita, something is going to happen in India also.  So we’ll come to this.
