We believe we are perfectly located for sightseeing in this area. Our gites are centrally located within the Charente Maritime, away form the hussle and traffic on the coast, yet within an easy drive of it; not too far inland yet again within a comfortable drive of all the inland sights and places of interest.

Our local town of
St Jean D'Angely is historic and interesting in its own right and is perfect for a gentle stroll around its cobbled streets, a coffee in one of its many bars or a relaxing meal for when you don't fancy travelling further afield. The Abbey is the main attraction, founded in the 9th century to house the relic of Saint John the Baptist, and rebuilt in the 14th, 17th and 18th centuries (because of repeated destruction), later abandoned, the Abbey is now a listed building. It remains the most remarkable piece of architectural work of Saint-Jean d'Angly; a town which has kept all its medieval charm. Situated on the pilgrim route which is registered by the UNESCO as "World Heritage of Humanity", the edifice still constitutes a major stopping off point towards Saint Jacques de Compostelle. Since 1989, the Royal Abbey has housed the Centre of European Culture, which has breathed new life into the Abbey by restoring it as a historical and cultural site and as a place for the exchange of ideas.
