The Tan is an old breed of rabbit and considered a fancy breed. The transition between the dark and the tan fur gives the Tan an intriguing look. The very first Tan rabbits were from Derbyshire, Britain in around 1887. They were originally larger than the versions we have today, and they only came in black (with a tan underbelly, of course.) The blue coloration was developed at the turn of the century. In the 1920s, the chocolate Tan appeared. Later, black Tans and blue Tans were mixed, creating lilac Tans. Tan rabbits, dubbed "The Aristocrat of the Fancy" by the American Tan Rabbit Sepcialy Club, have a glossy sheen that enhances thier fur color. In fact, black Tans are the only rabbits with black pelts that retain their color. All other pelts turn sepia after death of the rabbit. |
