The Death and Burial of Jesus
Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 19
There was darkness over the land, the earth shook, rocks split, graves opened, and the veil of the Temple was torn in half.
Jesus called out : "I thirst."
A bowl of vinegar stood nearby; so they held some to his mouth. When Jesus had recieved the vinger, he said: "It is finished.: And: " Father, into your hands, I commit my spirts."
Then Jesus breathed his last. He bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
When the Roman guard saw and heard Jesus, he praised God, saying: "Surely this man was innocent."
Many people who had been watching beat their breasts and went away. Those who knew him and had followed him stood at a distance and witnessed the death of Jesus.
The next day was the sabbath, so the people asked Pilate if they could remove the bodies for burial before the sabbath.
When the soldiers came to take down the body of Jesus, one of them pieced his side with a spear, causing blood and water to our forth.
After this, a rich man and a disciple of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea, secretly asked Pilate for the body of Jesus, to bury it. Pilate gave his permission. Then Joseph wrapped it in clean linen and placed it in his own tomb. He rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb and returned home.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene followed Joseph. They saw the tomb and how Jesus was laid in it. They stayed for a while and then, because it was the eve of the sabbath, they went home. On the sabbath they rested.
The next day the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate, saying: " We remember what Jesus said before He died, that after three days he would raise again. Therefore, place gaurds at the tomb, or his disiples will come and take his bodyand tell people thathe has risen. That would be the greatest deception of all."
Pilate agreed and sent his soldiers to seal the tomb and watch over it.
