| Chapter Three | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Why didn't Brian come up with you?" Kate was sitting with Cassie having lunch in a small caf. It had been two years sense she had been last up for Andie's wedding. | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Oh, he had some last minuet business and is going to fly up tomorrow afternoon. Do you want to come with me to Sea-Tac when I go to pick him up?" | |||||||||||||||||||
| "I would love to. So how have things been going for you two?" It felt like forever sense they had last talked. | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Things have been a little tough, but no marriage is perfect." Kate said cryptically. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Kate and Cassis waited at the terminal that Brian was due to arrive at. The plain arrived on time and they watch as people started to get off. | |||||||||||||||||||
| After 10 minuets Kate sill hadn't spotted him. "He must have gotten stuck sitting in the very back again." | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Excuse me, miss?" I little old lady taped Kate on the arm. | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Yes?" Kate responded grateful for the distraction. | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Are you Kate Fleck?" | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Yes, that would be me." | |||||||||||||||||||
| "A young man asked me to give you this envelope right before the plain left." She pulled a large manila envelope from her shoulder bag. | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Umm...thank you." Kate and Cassie exchanged quizzical looks. Deep inside Kate had a bad feeling that something was wrong. She opened the envelop and found another envelope a little smaller and a folded not with her name on it stating that is was to be opened first. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Kate- | |||||||||||||||||||
| Something came up and I couldn't leave for Seattle. | |||||||||||||||||||
| The other envelope is not to be opened at the airport (where I am sure you are at right now). Open it when you get home and you'll understand why. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Brian | |||||||||||||||||||
| Kate was confused by the note, it wasn't like him, why hadn't he just called her? "Why don't we just head over to my place, you can open the rest there?" | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Okay," Kate was still ver confused and the feeling in the pit of her stomcah just wasn't going away. | |||||||||||||||||||
| They arrived at Cassie's apparment and she led Kate in. "I've never been to your appartment before." Kate looked around but something felt off. Some of the little trinkets sitting around just didn't like things that Cassie would keep around, they seemed more like... | |||||||||||||||||||
| Kate picked up a picture frame and looked at it sadly. The picture had been taken the summer after her graduation. She looked at Cassie with a question in her eyes. Cassie knew what she was going to ask. "Yah, I have a roommate. Robby and I both live here." | |||||||||||||||||||
| "I could tell." Kate put the picture back and then looked down at the envelope in her hands. | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Don't worry, my brother doesn't get back from work for a couple more hours, so you don't have to see him if you don't want to." Cassie tried to reassure her. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Well that's good, the last thing I need is Robby here, Kate thought bitterly, but then her bitterness faded into sadness. "I guess it's time that I see what Brian left for me to read." | |||||||||||||||||||
| Kate and Cassie sat down at the dinning room table. Kate opened up the envelope and dumped out it's constants on the table. The first things that Kate noticed were the documents concerning the purchase of the house that they had been considering. Then her eyes caught a hand written letter. | |||||||||||||||||||
| You knew this was coming, it's over. Don't try and make this any harder, just sign the papers and get it over with. Don't try to call or contact me again. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Kate took a deep breath, "I think I need to get some air." | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Do you want me to come with you?" Cassie asked concerned, she didn't know weather Kate should be alone after what she had justread. | |||||||||||||||||||
| "No, I need to be alone for a little bit," she looked into the worried eyes of her friend. "Don't worry, I'll be fine. I won't do anything drastic." Kate said as if she had read Cassie's mind. | |||||||||||||||||||
| "Okay, I'll be here if you need me." Cassie gave Kat's hand an encouraging squeeze. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Kate walked blindly through the old park not too far from where Cassie lived. Not many people came to the park so Kate felt some resemblance of safety. | |||||||||||||||||||
| It has started to get dark and cold but she didn't take any notice of it. Kate followed a path through some trees until they opened up to reveal an old stone bridge. By then the sun has set and it was growing cold and dark. She walked out to the middle and looked over the edge. She couldn't see the river at the bottom, it was just a black ravine. Oh how she wished she could just despair into it's blackness and not have to feel all the hurt and betrayal that she knew she would feel as soon as the numbness wore off. As she watched below, she could feel her walls breaking down, that was when her tears began to fall. The bitter reality of her situation was dawning on her and she lost all the power she had over her legs and sank slowly down the cold stones until she was huddled on the grown clinging to her legs. The damn on her emotions had finally broken loose. | |||||||||||||||||||
