| Robby took a short-cut home. Normally he would go out with a group of friends after work, but Cassie had called and asked him to come home right away, she wouldn't tell him why but he knew something was wrong. | ||||||||||||||
| He was walking quietly, deep in thought when he heard someone crying softy over in the direction of the old stone bridge. He walked toward the sound, when he got there he saw a young woman huddled up on the cold stones, her body shacking with the force of heart wrenching sobs. | ||||||||||||||
| As he walked toward her the girl heard him and got up quickly, "I didn't know anyone was coming." Her voice was choked with emotion. | ||||||||||||||
| "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," he paused. "But are you okay?" The girl's back was turned to him but there was something vaguely formillier about her. It wasn't that he recognized her, by then she had moved completely into the shadows. As she spoke is was more her presence, he just felt he knew her. Then it hit, him who it was. | ||||||||||||||
| "No but I don't want to trouble you with my problems." Kate turned around and looked toward the young man who had shown up so unexceptantly. She couldn't see his face because he was so far from the lamppost behind her. | ||||||||||||||
| "Maybe I could help in some way." Robby took a couple steps and reached out toward her. Just as he did so the light behind her went out. | ||||||||||||||
| The sudden loss of light and the man coming towards her caused Kate to jump. Instinctively she covered her stomach with a protective hand. | ||||||||||||||
| The movement did not go unnoticed by Robby. "You're pregnet, aren't you?" | ||||||||||||||
| Kate looked up just when the moon broke free from a cloud and flooded the aria with it?s silvery light making it possible for her to see Robby clearly. She nodded, a small smile touched her lips. | ||||||||||||||
| "That's wonderful! How far along are you?" Robby lead her over to a stone bench and they sat down together. | ||||||||||||||
| "Two months, I think." | ||||||||||||||
| "You and Brian must be ecstatic," Robby was genuinely happy that she had finally been able to find happiness. But there was still the twinge of regret, if only...No, I won't allow myself to think about that, I can't change the past. "But why were you crying?" | ||||||||||||||
| "Well I don't know what Brian thinks about it, he doesn't know." | ||||||||||||||
| "What do you mean Brian doesn't know?" Robby was shocked that Kate would not tell her husband something this important. | ||||||||||||||
| "I didn't find out until a week ago. And with the way things have been going, I couldn't... find a way to tell him. And if he had things his way he'll never know.' Kate added disheartedly under her breath. | ||||||||||||||
| "What do you mean by that? You aren't thinking of..." | ||||||||||||||
| "Oh, no! Never! I would never harm my baby!" Kate rubbed her stomach, as if in a way of reassuring her baby that she would never so something like that. | ||||||||||||||
| "Thank goodness, you had me worried there for a moment. But how will Brian not know? You're going to start showing soon." Robby watched as Kate's eyes filled with tears as she tried to come up with the words to answer him. | ||||||||||||||
| Finally Kate just gave in, there was no nice way of saying it, she stood up hoping to gain the physical stability to say it, her shoulders fell as she spoke. "Brian and I are getting a divorce. I got the paperwork today." She took a deep breath, now that she had said it aloud there was no way of hiding form it. | ||||||||||||||
| Robby attempted to swallow the lump that had formed in his throat. He just wanted to pull her into a tight hug and protect her from all the pain that she was going through, but he wasn't sure weather Kate would take the action the wrong way. | ||||||||||||||
| Robby's fears were silenced when she hugged him herself. At first he was shocked and just stood there but a moment later he rapped his arm around her and returned the hug. He was careful not to squeeze her too tight due to her condition. She felt so right in his arms, oh how he had missed holding her. A few moments later they parted. "What was that for?" Robby asked with a smile. | ||||||||||||||
| "For being you." | ||||||||||||||
| "Who else would I be?" Robby joked. | ||||||||||||||
| Kate laughed and hit him lightly on the shoulder. It had been a long time sense she had really laughed. They walked back to the bridge and leaned on the side looking down into the black 'nothingness' below. | ||||||||||||||
| "So do you want to tell me what happened?" Robby asked getting serious. | ||||||||||||||
| Kate was quiet for a long time. When she did finally speak it was in a barely audible whisper. "I caught him with someone else. I was really hurt but I wanted to try and save the marriage, I guess he didn't." | ||||||||||||||
| Robby stood there stunned, he didn't know what to think. He has heard the same story a hundred times before, but this time was different. How could Brian do that? He was married to most beautiful, intelligent and loving woman in the world. Either he was blind or the dumbest man in the world, Robby thought bitterly. His shock had given way to anger, then looking at Kate's haunted face; that too gave way to sorrow. | ||||||||||||||
