Chapter Two
At dinner Kate sat at the opposite end of the table and avoided all the conversations that he would be a part of, so mainly that left her talking to his sister Alyssa. Eventually she relaxed and began to enjoy herself. As the night was drawing to a close Andie's mother clapped her hands for attention. "As mother of the bride I'm entitled to act the part of the mother and as the mother I want to get a few pictures of the wedding party. So if you'll all come over here so I can get a few pictures."
Kate sighed and got up. Andie's mother arranged everyone just the way she thought was best, and of coarse she put Kate and Robby together.
"Come on you two, you're both actors, can you at least act happy to see each other?" Andie's mother joked.
Oh, I'm more than happy to see him. Goodness he looks even better than he did the last time I saw him, Kate thought to herself as Andie's mother arranged everyone for the pictures. The first to get their pictures taken were the bride and groom, than she wanted the whole wedding party. The last but sertianlly the most agonizing for Kate were the ones where when Andie?s mother insisted on having pictures of the best-man and maid-of-honor together.
It was a beautiful day for an April wedding. Clear blue skys and a mildly warm wind was only made better by the daffodils and tulips in bloom. The Church was alive with the sounds of last minuet wedding preparations. The flowers had already been set up filling the sanctuary with a heavenly array of scents. Andie had picked soft purples, pinks, yellows, and blues to decorate the interior of the church. The dresses that the bride's maids were wairirng were simple spring dresses made of a pail rose print. All the girls had small flowers in their hair. Everything, the whole wedding had delicate, yet simple feel to it. The wedding its   self was sweat, and everything went just as planned.
Some how Kate was able to manage walking down the isle with Robby without falling or embarrassing herself. All the night before her sleep had been plagued with nightmares of humiliation and falling flat on her face.
She stood up as a witness for her two friends and watched happily as they exchanged vows and pledged their lives to each other. Just as they were Kate stole a glance over at Robby. To her shock her was looking right at her.
Was it just her or did it seem as if he was thinking the same thing as her? "It could have been us up there, we could have been the ones who were giving their lives to each other." No, Kate thought. That is probably the farthest thing from his mind. He is the one who broke up with me, how could he be having second thoughts three years later? No he is just thinking and his eyes just happen to be in my direction.
Everyone arrived at the reception in high spirits. The food that was out looked wonderful, but everyone was waiting for the newly married couple to arrive before the party could get really going.
Andie and Dave arrived shortly after the rest of the wedding party and everything got started.
The food and cake were wonderful, Andie smeared the cake all over his face. After all the toasts and speeches were make they started the music. Following with tradition the bride and groom ahd the first dance alone. As soon as the song was over everyone was about to go out onto the dance floor and Kate breathed a sigh of relief. She had been afraid that they were going to call the second song to be for the wedding party.
"Hold it! We're forgetting something," the DJ called out to the crowd. "It's bad luck to disregard tradition. And tradition says that the second song is saved for the wedding party. So can we have the wedding party step out onto the floor." Most everyone from the wedding party excitedly jumped out onto the dance floor, that is, everyone except Kate who shyly made her way out.
"Okay first, couple up with whoever you walked up with. Let's have the maid-of-honor and the best-man come right up front here," he pointed to the center of the dance floor. Kate looked around for a way to excape but there was none. Determined not to ruin her best friend's wedding she took a deep breath and slowly walked out and met Robby in the center on the dance floor.
By then the DJ had walked out onto the floor with a cordless mic. "Wow! What a hottie!" The DJ elbowed Robby and joked, "If I were you I wouldn't let this beautiful creature out of your sight, someone might try and steal her away" This brought a gale of giggles from the crowd, the only ones that weren't laughing were the one who knew the truth.
The music started, Kate felt awkward dancing with Robby again. At first she was stiff and felt like they were miles apart.
Somewhere between
What can and can't be seen
I knelt in your spring
You dusted off my wings
Feels like a brush with grace
Baby, that all it takes
To take me higher
As soon as the words had started Kate sighed, slowly her walls began to crumble down, she could feel that same from Robby as he pulled her closer to him.
If true love really does exist
It would feel as pure as this
Baby, it as if
We?re dancing angels
Stealing light from shooting stars
We?re just taking what is our
In each other's arms
We?re dancing with angels.
Kate let her head rest on Robby's chest and listened to his heartbeat. Kate knew that everything would lead her back to heartbreak but if felt so good just to pretend that the past three years had never happened and they were back to the way things once were.
How did we find
Smooth blue in a croked sky
Could be love winds
Bold threads throught a grand design
Your whisper on my skin
Familiar healing wind
We must be slipping in
Heaven's window
Robby rested his chin on the top in Kate's head, Oh how he wanted to believe that Kate felt the same way that he did. He wished he could hold her in his arms forever, he didn't want to think about the ring on her hand and what it meant. In reaction to the thought that this could be the last time that he ever danced with her like this he tightened his arms around Kate's figure. He hadn't noticed how much smaller she was from the last time he had seen her, but he could feel that her small form felt even smaller in his arms. Kate smiled in response to her tighter hold on her. She pulled back slightly so she could look into his face.
You're kiss upon my face
Feels like a brush with grace
Baby, that's all it takes
To take me higher
For a moment their eyes locked and neither could look away. They both knew that each other wanted, but neither would allow it.
The song ended and moved right into some face paced swing music. Kate's eyes lit up with excitement, "You still remember how?"
"Of coarse. Think you can still keep up with me?" Robby teased.
"Well how about we dance and we'll see if you can keep up with me?" Kate playfully shot back.
The music played on and Robby was pleasantly surprised to see that she had gotten better and had even learned some new moves, which she taught him as they went along.
"Wow, I see you haven't forgotten a thing." Robby joked as he pulled her in for a spin.
"While I was at ASU I joined a swing dance club. It really helped to be around people who had the same interests as me."
Kate and Robby continued to dance much into the night. It was just like old times. Finally around 11pm Robby pulled Kate off the dance floor. "I forgot how much energy you have at night. Let's sit the next few out."
Kate laughed, "Sure. It is rather hot in here, how about we go out into the terrace? It's a nice night out."
Robby could see that she was hot, her face was all flustered and the blush traveled down her neck to her chest. "That sounds good. The cool air might wake me up a little." They walked past the dinner tables and were just about to go outside when the DJ called for everyone's attention.
"Before the bride and groom take off its time for the tossing of the garter and bouquet." Kate hid the best she could in the back of the crowd.
Andie gathered all the single women on the dance floor. "Okay girls I don't want to see any fighting." She looked over her shoulder and seemed to give a nod to the group of girls and smiled knowingly at Kate. On the count of 3 she threw the bouquet. All at once the girls split down the middle and someone gave Kate a slight push, she looked up just in time to see the bouquet heading right for her. There was no place to run and hide to, all she could do was stand there and catch it. All the girls giggled and squealed. Kate gave Andie the look, but she grew shy when she realized that Robby was standing right behind Andie. Their eyes locked and he smiled approvingly.
Next the guys were herded onto the dance floor. Andie kicked her leg up into a chair and Dave tenderly removed her garter. He also looked at the guys in the front of the crowd and nodded also then turned his back to the crowd and flung it over his shoulder. A few guys moved out of the way leaving an open path strait to Robby, it wasn't as dramatic of a part that the girls had been, it was more suddel, but it still got the job done, a group of guts hooted and hit him on his back.
Kate looked at Robby shyly, she knew that Andie and Dave had planned this but she still couldn't help but think of it symbolized. "Well, well, well, looks like we know who'll be hookin' up next." The DJ announced suggestively.
Kate could feel everyone's eyes on her, oh how she wished she could believe that. She discretely made her way out of the crowd and onto the terrace. Pulling off the peach gloves that matched her dress, Kate stared down at what she could turn out to be the worst mistake of her life. The small diamond seemed to have lost the sparkle that she once thought that it had, compared to the bouquet it didn?t hold the sweet memories.
A voice from behind her pulled her out of her depressing thoughts, "Getting too hot in there?"
Kate refused to turn around and look at him; she didn't want him to see the silent tears that were sliding down her cheeks. "Yeah, you know how easily I get too hot." Kate dropped the little white lie half-hoping Robby would catch her in it and ask her what was going on.
"Too hot, you? The girl that moved down to Arizona mainly for the weather?" Robby scoffed, but grew serious when he saw that Kate didn't join in on the joke. "Kate," his voice was a soft as a whisper but it held Kate?s attention, "what's wrong?"
"Nothing," Kate didn't trust her voice enough to say anything more.
"Liar," Robby looked at her wondering what was wrong. He took a step closer to her and touched her shoulder.
Kate let out a soft sob at his touch; it was both pleasure and pain. His touch held the comfort and strength that she had been lacking, but she couldn't allow herself to accept any of his comfort or his strength.
Robby grew more determined to know what was wrong. He gently but firmly turned her around so he could talk to her and not her back. Kate yielded and turned around but she refused to look up at him and kept her head down, looking down at her feet. Robby refused to give in; with all the patience he could gather inside himself he placed his hand under her chin and lifted her face up to look at him. His heart nearly broke when he saw the tear streaks on her face. "Why have you been crying?" Robby followed Kate's gaze as it fell to the ring on her hand and his heart broke once again. "All this wedding stuff make you miss Brian?"
Kate's eyes shot up and widened, Robby took her response as a yes, but little did he know it was pain. Pain, because she didn't miss him, pain because she didn't want to hear his name again.
