| Chapter One | |||||||||
| Kate knocked on the door hesitantly. If had been years sense she had been back in Seattle. When Andrea (or as everyone called her, Andie) had told her about Dave proposing Kate had been beyond excited for her, but when Andie asked her to be her maid-of-honor she almost declined. But she couldn't, Andie had been there and supported her even after she had moved to Arizona four years ago. | |||||||||
| So there she was, standing at one of her best-friend's door three days before the wedding. | |||||||||
| Alyssa opened the door, Kate almost didn?t recognize her, she had grown taller and more slender, but it was her eyes that had allowed Kate to recognize her. They were the same chocolate brown eyes that everyone in her family had. "Alyssa!" | |||||||||
| At the sound of her voice recognition flashed in Alyssa's eyes. "Kate? Oh my gawd! Andie said you were coming, but wow! It's so good to see you!" They gave each other a tight hug, oh how Kate had missed her friends. Four years was a long time to be without her frinds, sure she had come up a few times (well really only twice, and both of them had been for her friends' graduations). | |||||||||
| The days few by, during the day everyone was running around helping Andie with last minute things, but the nights were set aside for girl time and catching up. They talked about almost everything, but the one thing that everyone was careful not to bring up was Robby. When they had broken up, Kate was still very much in love with him, but she never told him. | |||||||||
| They day of the rehearsal came and all the girls arrived together at the church. | |||||||||
| "Looks like everyone is already here. Alyssa, could you go and find them, and tell them that we?re here?" Andie asked. Alyssa cheerfully nodded and all the girls dispersed. "Kate, can I talk to you for a second?" Andie asked taking her hand in a worried fashion. | |||||||||
| "Sure," Kate saw the worried look in her eyes. "You aren't getting cold feet are you?" | |||||||||
| "Oh, no. This is about something else entirely. I kind of avoided telling you this because I was worried you might not come. Robby is going to be here, you know that right?" The worry in Andie's voice was apparent. | |||||||||
| "Don't worry, I won't back out. I'm just going to have to avoid him, that's all. This is your time, and it's going to stay that way. Now stop worrying about me, I have the ultimate form of protection." Kate held up her left hand and allowed for the light to catch in the large diamond ring on a gold band. "Being engaged does have some advantages, you know." Kate joked. | |||||||||
| "I never did get to ask you about that." Andie said, she didn't want to push, she knew that Kate would tell her when she was ready. | |||||||||
| "We'll talk about it later," Andie gave her a knowing look. "Tonight, okay? But right now you have a rehearsal to get to." | |||||||||
| Before Andie could say anything else Kate pulled her into the correct room. | |||||||||
| A few moments later everyone was standing in front of the pastor. "Okay, for starters let's get the separate couples paired off. Bride and Groom up here with me, maid-of-honor and best-man next to them, and then everyone pair up in order of how you will me coming." The pastor stepped aside to wait for everyone to get in order. | |||||||||
| Everyone looked around at eachother rather confused, the looked to Andie for direction. "I knew I had forgotten something..." Andie looked at the group of people and began to arrange them in a way that she thought would be best. | |||||||||
| Kate stood off to the side; on the outside she was the perfect picture of calm and composed, but on the inside she was falling apart. Now she knew what Andie had been trying to tell her, Robby was the best man, which meant they would have to walk down the asle together. Kate felt like running, all the feeling that she had worked so hard to bury deep down, all came rushing back to her. | |||||||||
| He had grown even taller and had filled out some, but he was still as wiry as ever. She prayed that no one would say her name or draw any attention (especially his) to her. He hadn't yet spotted her, the whole time before she had stayed in the back of the group just for that purpose. | |||||||||
| "Kate, earth to Kate." Alyssa whispered in her ear. Kate looked at her startled. "You can do this, it'll be just like old times." | |||||||||
| Kate hugged her tightly, "I sure hope you're right." Her voice was strained, filled with overwhelming emotion. She took her place next to Robby and thankfully the pastor moved things along in a way that she didn't have to speak to him or even look at him. | |||||||||
