WHAT & WHY:
I can't speak for all Ladyfests as they probably all differ in ideals and goals. Also, every Ladyfest organiser probably has different reasons for being involved. So this is mainly what I think but it may be similar to what other Ladyfesters think:
HERSTORY:
The first Ladyfestival ever was held in the summer of 2000 in Olympia WA, in the North West of USA. Olympia is also the town where the Riot Grrrl Movement was born. Ladyfest Olympia was very succesful and it inspired many girls to put up similar projects/events. The next year several Ladyfests took place: 4 in the USA and 1 in Glasgow, Scotland. The number of Ladyfests kept increasing and in 2002 Ladyfests were organised in: the USA (7), Canada (2), the UK (London), Holland (Amsterdam) and Belgium (Leuven).
2003:
2003 will again be a "Ladyfest year". From February to November Ladyfests of all sizes and sorts are taking place over the world: in Indonesia, the USA (7), Australia, Canada, Germany, the UK (3), Italy, France, Holland, Sweden, Belgium...

Ladyfest is a non-profit women-run festival that aims to promote and support art & projects by women and girls (trans-inclusive), but everyone is welcome and encouraged to visit the festival. Unlike other (punk/rock/alternative) festivals, Ladyfest doesn't only offer music. Spoken word, theatre, film, workshops, art exhibitions, DJs, activism, bands of all kind of styles, etc can be part of it. We want to support female artists not only because they are women but mainly because they are GOOD and they rarely get any chances to perform or show their work. It is not our goal to have only "ladies-only" festivals or events, but we want balance. Ladyfest is just one step on our way to equality. I feel that female voices, projects and art needs to be seen/heard. I want to encourage other festival organisers to consider booking female bands/projects because they are just as good as the boys (if not better :-)). I want to support non-mainstream underground bands/artists and bands/artists outside of the "west" so they can have a chance to put up a tour.
