CASTLE TERMS

Allure: Wall-walk passage behind the parapet
Bailey: Courtyard
Buttery: Room for serving beverages
Cat: Assult tower
Curtain: A castle wall enclosing a courtyard
Keep: The inner stronghold of a castle
Drawbridge: A moveable wooden bridge
Gardenrobe: Latrine
Motte: An earthwork mound where castles are built
Parapet: Wall at the top of a fortification
Postern: Secondary gate or door
Solar: A private sitting room off the great hall

FEUDAL TERMS

Almoner: An offical appointed to give alms
Castle Guard: Feudal obligation to serve in castle garrison
Chamberlain: Offical in charge of lord's chamber
Castellan: Governor of castle
Buffet: Traditional blow given to knight at his dubbing
Curia Regis: English royal council
Ost: Feudal military service of lord's army
Mesnie: Military personnel of castle household
Provost: Feudal or royal magistrate
Scutage: Shield tax, paid in lieu of military service
Squire: A knight aspirant
Villein: A 'slave'-laborer usually subject to fuedal dues
