Laconic is an alternative rock band based in Salem, Oregon. None of us can really describe our specific style. Matt once heard a band describe themselves as "American Rock," and he therefore adapted that as our style heading. But alternative works. Our influences include all types of music: all of us are into alterternative and harder stuff, Brendan listens to the occasional country song, Matt listens to and plays everything from jazz to hip-hop to funk and back again. The band started out with Gabe on guitar and vocals, Matt on drums and vocals, and Warren on bass (as well as Joe, who we wouldn't be complete without) in December of 2000 (who had been playing together for about two months prior). At that point, they were a cover band, know as Fret and then Draft. They played a gig at Matt's churh for New Years. Then we decided to write our own stuff and work on the vocals (any of you have heard him know that Matt can't sing). The first originals were mostly punk and alternative (from that first bunch, only "Hold Me Up" and the lyrics to "Trendy" remain; there were another ten plus songs that have been written and dropped). The name was changed to Third Life in February of 2001, then Flip-Side about a month later. After playing for a few months, it was still evident that something was lacking, a second guitarist. Brendan tried out, and fit perfectly. After bringing in Brendan and his perspective on music to the band, we began to create music that sounded like... well... music. Currently, none of us have major side projects. Gabe found a spot in a band and is the lead singer for them. But they dont have a name at the moment and are still writing songs. Brendan can be seen with both Jazz Etc. and Concert Choir at South Salem High School. Matt can be seen in the Jumpin' Jubilee Jazz Band (a dixieland group), as well as South's jazz band, wind ensemble, marching band, and percussion ensmble. And Warren can be seen running down Commercial on Mondays, Wednesdays, and maybe Fridays, either around 4pm or sometime in the dark. As for our gigging situations, we try for shows all over the place. Basically, we'll play anywhere that'll have us. If you are looking for some entertainment at a party, we are always happy to play. We even do musical chairs. So feel free to e-mail us and we'll see what we can do. |
