The LA Chess League was founded by William Sidney Morriss, in the fall of 2001 in order to give the USC Chess Club a chance to compete together as a team. Originally, he had thought to run a college only league where teams would physically meet and play against each other (as opposed to on the internet). However, he received little response to the idea of a physical college chess league and he decided to open the league to the general public. That decision proved to be tremendously fortuitous and the LA Chess League's first session was a tremendous success.

After the Spring 2002 season, William Morris handed the league over to me (Daniel Berman) because he was off to law school back east!

I played in the first and second seasons and may even play in this third Summer 2002 season. The first season was a blast, I was on the Cacao Boys team that won the league.  The first season consisted of seven teams and we played in a round robin format. One of the things I liked about the league, was that we saw where other people played chess regularly. One of my favorite memories of the first season (other than winning the league) was how nice some of the people I met were.  For example, Dean Arvadson, the team captain and a professor of Astronomy of L.A.C.C took us up to look at the observatory telescope.  Our team stayed for over two hours watching the stars after the match.

Well anyway enough of the fluff, lets play chess!
