| Tired of having too little time, too much to do, and too many fires to put out? Here are some tips and tricks for you to tranquilize your out-of-control life, in some simple stress-fighting steps: | ||||||||||||||||
| 1. Admit your human: Cut yourself some slack. Comb trough your typical day and cut out what's not absolutely necessary. Ask yourself: Is it really essential that I do this now? |

| 2. Quit being a perfectionist: Not settling for anything less than your best is one thing, but de- manding perfection is self-sabotaging. The pressure to meet such high standards makes even the smallest task seem huge. Concentrate your efforts in those areas where you're likely to achieve results, and forget about the rest. 3. Just say no: When asked for extra help when you don't have the time, what's your immediate reaction? Sure, I'll do it - you can count on me. Well, being this agreeable can send your stress meter right through the roof. Not only are you adding to your register of responsi- bilities, but now you have to deal with feeling like a problem solver too. 4. After you say no, don't say anything else: The more you explain, the more room you give others to poke holes in your excuses or suggest alternatives. 5. Don't ask for opinions if you don't want them: If you don't really care, all you're having is a meaningless conversation. Additionally, you end up getting stuck either acting on others' opinions or explaining why you didn't take their advice. 6. Don't finish a boring book, movie, project or relationship just because you started it: We try to stick it out to find the one part that will justify all the rest of the time we spent on it. But you have to know when to quit throwing good time after bad. 7. Apply the in-out rule: For every piece of clothing or item that you purchase, pitch one or give it to charity. 8. Remodel your house: does your home bear little if any resemblance to the tidy homes they feature in home-decorating magazines? If you can't find something in 15 seconds, than your house is working against you. Every item in your home you don't want, need, wear or think you'll use, thrash it today. Stop hoarding stuff - you're not a survivalist. Take a "one room, one day" approach to throw out all junk. Pitch anything that's broken, outdated, or though to operate. 9. Give into distractions: When we're busy and get distracted our concentration is broken and we usually panic. Interruptions make us feel like we're loosing control, but the thruth is, surrendering to interruptions can be an ideal way to give your workhorse self a rest. They keep you from succumbing to stress and jumping out of the window. 10. Be wherever you are: You're likely to think ahead to the 10 things you need to do later, but living in fast-forward means never being in the moment - and never giving your brain some needed healthy hangtime. Concentrate on the moment and reflect on how you feel now. |
