HATCHLING GUIDE

1. How do I get a hatchling?

In order to obtain a hatchling, speak to Pet Manager Cooper in Giran (located near the Luxury Shop) to start the quest.
Note: there is a bug in the Infinity server which allows you to instantly level your new hatchling six levels if you summon him for the first time outside Goddard.

2. What are the three different kinds of hatchlings?

Wind: best patk & matk;

Star: best pdef & mdef;

Twilight: has no special skills; eats the least amount of food.

All hatchlings keep their special skills onece they become striders

3. How do I summon my hatchling?

Follow the server rules and never summon your hatchling inside a town (you risk having your pet deleted if you're seen).
Double-click on your dragon flute in your inventory to summon your hatchling. Once summoned, double-click his bar to open his status window. Transfer his armour, weapon, food and any potions he will be using from your inventory into his "Items" window.
Set up a hotkey bar for when your hatchling is in use, by dragging his skills, food and potions to the hotkey bar.

4. What? I have to feed this beast?

Yes! And he is a hungry little guy! Keep an eye on his green "hunger meter". If you allow that bar to fall below 50%, your hatchling will decide to go find himself a more considerate owner and will run away, never to return. Buy hatchling food (195 adena) at any Pet Manager located in most cities. Food is only consumed by your hatchling once it has been placed in his "Items" window.

5. What equipment should I buy my hatchling?

The best hatchling equipment is sold by Pet Manager Cooper in Giran. The better the armour, the less likely your hatchling is to die. The better the weapon, the faster your hatchling will kill mobs when soloing. After placing your hatchling's equipment in his "Items" window, double-click both armour and weapon to equip them. This must be done every time you resummon your hatchling, as his equipment returns to your inventory when you unsummon.
Note: your hatchling will always drop his weapon and armour if he dies, so be prepared to pick it up fast if this happens!

6. Can my hatchling use potions?

Yes! Not only is he able to use them, he should use them! In order for your hatchling to use potions, they must be placed in his "Items" window, the dragged to his hotkey bar. Keep him well supplied with healing potions and don't hesitate to use them if the mob turns on your little guy. Haste, mana and GSA pots may all be used by your hatchling if dragged to his "Items" window.

7. Can my hatchling be buffed?

Yes! He will be much stronger and able to kill faster with Prophet buffs. He is also better protected and doesn't die as easily. Buy buffs for him any time you get the chance or party with your friendly neighbourhood Prophet. If you play a summoner class, you are able to use all servitor skills (heals, buffs) on your hatchling.

8. How do I level up my hatchling?

By gaining xp from killing mobs. The more xp your hatchling gets, the faster he will level. The xp is divided evenly between the hatchling and the owner, according to who who deals the most damage. The hatchling shares xp with his owner if the owner deals any damage to the mob. The more damage the hatchling does to the mob (compared to his owner) the more xp he gets. Therefore, it is best for you not to hit the mobs but to let the hatchling do all the damage.

9. What is the best way to get xp for my hatchling?

Soloing: the best classes for soloing a hatchling are those able to aggro the mob without dealing damage. Repeatedly use root, a hate skill or debuffs to keep the mob aggro'd to you, while sending your hatchling to kill the mob. Be prepared to quickly heal your hatchling or to immediately kill the mob if the mob turns on your hatchling. All xp will go to your hatchling.

In Party: the safest, and often fastest, way to xp your hatchling is in a small party. Allow your party member(s) to aggro the mobs, then send your hatchling in to assist with the kill. Again, be prepared to quickly heal your hatchling or to immediately kill the mob if the mob turns on your hatchling, Your share of the party xp will go to your hatchling, provided you do not hit the mob.

10. What if my hatchling dies?

It loses a lot of xp! You must use a resurrection scroll within a certain amount of time (unsure how long) on your hatchling, otherwise he is unable to be res'd and is permanently deleted. Bishop/EE res skill does not work on hatchlings, so you must be sure you carry res scrolls in your inventory. If you die and teleport to village your hatchling will teleport with you.

11. Where are the best places to level my hatchling?

Lvl 35 - 41: Near Oren (Leto Lizardmen - the ones without hp multiplier), Death Pass, Cruma
Lvl 40 - 48: Death Valley (Shackles, Skeletons), North of Ivory Tower (Former)
Lvl 48 - 55: Cemetery near FG

12. Why should I even bother to level a hatchling?

To get a Strider! Once your hatchling reaches lvl 55, it can be turned into a Strider. It keeps all the skills it had as a (wind, star or twilight) hatchling, but the main purpose to having a Strider is to ride it.
When mounted, your Strider cannot die and he does not consume food.
Mounted Striders cannot use skills; however, they have a fast run speed and are immune to being slowed by your own skills (such as Silent Move) or by attack from mobs or other players.
