                                       What is Tourette Syndrome?

1. Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurobiological genetic disorder that consists of numerous motor and
vocal tics (Woods and Marcks, 2005).

2.
Motor tics are "rapid, recurrent muscle movements [anywhere in the body] (e.g., head jerking, hard eye
blinking) (Woods, Koch, & Miltenberger, 2003, p.68).

3.
Vocal tics are "rapid, recurrent sounds, noises, words or phrases (e.g., grunting, throat clearing)"
(Woods, Koch, & Miltenberger, 2003, p.68).

4.The tics expressed by individuals with TS often increase negative social ramifications within individuals
who view them (Woods and Marcks, 2005) which may create social difficulties, and emotional adjustment
problems in children with TS.
