Overview
Between 12 June and 4 July 2004, Portugal will be the centre of
the sporting world as the UEFA EURO 2004™ final tournament
takes place. Europe’s top 16 national teams will compete for
the Henri Delaunay Trophy in the biggest international sporting
event ever staged in Portugal.
EURO seeks improvement
Well over a million people attended UEFA EURO 2000™ final
round matches and the final tournament captured a worldwide
cumulative audience of over seven billion viewers, making it the
third most popular sporting event in the world. UEFA EURO 2004™
in Portugal looks set to exceed even these impressive figures.
Planning well underway
Just as the qualifying campaign has begun for 50 countries, the
planning and organisation of one of the world’s biggest
sporting occasions is well underway. Indeed, a company Euro
2004, S.A., a joint venture between UEFA and the Portuguese
Football Federation, has been set up to organise the Final
Tournament in partnership with UEFA, the Portuguese Football
Federation and the Portuguese Government.
Ten venues across Portugal
UEFA EURO 2004™ will feature 31 matches in ten venues,
stretching from Faro/Loulé in the Algarve to northern venues
such as Porto and Braga. Euro

Transport and communication
The Portuguese economic boom of recent years has coincided with
extensive investment in the country’s infrastructure, which
has seen it develop state-of-the-art transport networks and
communication systems.
Investment
UEFA EURO 2004™ will, of course, stimulate construction of new
stadiums or refurbishment of existing facilities as well as
associated infrastructure. The Government has quoted industry
sources estimating a €1 billion boost to construction that
will affect several cities.
Rapid development
Portugal is equipped with state-of-the-art telecommunication
systems and a wide range of services. The country’s
communication systems have undergone rapid development in recent
years.
National Supporters
The National Supporter programme is a unique development for
UEFA EURO 2004™, involving a limited group of six companies.
Crucial role
The national supporters will play a crucial role in making UEFA
EURO 2004™ a success; especially in promoting UEFA's premier
national team competition in Portugal.
Stamp of approval
Postal service CTT Correios de Portugal was the first national
supporter to sign up. CTT will be allowed exclusive rights of
brand identification, stadium promotions, advertising and
commercial benefits in their commercial sector.
Positive energy
Galp Energia signed up as the second national supporter. Galp
Energia will be involved in promotional activities up until and
during the championships, promoting itself as the Official
Energy Partner of UEFA EURO 2004™.
Security
Security, in all its aspects, will be one of the main concerns;
not only within the stadiums and its surrounding areas, but also
in the cities and in the routes that link them.
Commission established
Euro 2004 SA., responsible for the national coordination of the
stewards, is an integral part of the Security Commission for
UEFA EURO 2004™. Under the direct control of the Portuguese
State, the Commission has specially created for the preparation
and the running of the event. The Commission includes all the
state entities responsible for the active, passive, structural,
technological and logistical security.
